DGPS Verification

 Purpose:

 - prove integrity of positioning system

 - offset check

 - prove correctness of geodetic datum

DGPS Verification Methods

Several methods of performing DGPS Verification

 Alongside reference stations

 Platform transit

Primary Positioning System versus Secondary System

www.fugro.com
Alongside Verification

Same principle as gyrocompass calibration using two known points onshore

measuring range and bearing to a point on the vessel, preferably CRP or
the GPS antenna

Alternatively, put the vessel’s GPS antenna on top of the control point

If CRP is used gyro calibration and offset measurements must have been
performed beforehand

Log positioning data using COP and process in form F- Positioning

Verification

Agreement must be within 2 or 3 metres for standard DGPS, better than

0.5m for Starfix.HP or SkyFix XP

Offshore - Platform Transit

Sail around platform clockwise and anti-clockwise

Centre coordinate of platform must be known

Take fixes from an offset location every time two legs are in
line

Positioning System Comparison Method

 Preferably alongside

 Compare primary and secondary position

Integrity of positioning systems and offsets checks

Logging every three minutes for one hour using COP-file

Motion Reference Unit Calibrations

Calibrations - Motion Reference Unit

Vessel must be stable for proper calibration

Measure by Total Station or Spirit Level

– along centre line (pitch)
– across centre line (roll)

Alternatively: average measurements over 1 hour

Important: MRU must be aligned with centreline within 0.5 degree !!
