WHATDOES #STUDYABROADSOBLACK MEAN? Our hash tag is a both a declaration and a call to action letting it be known that studying abroad is a learning experience that is accessible and necessary for students at Howard and elsewhere. It is reported by IIE’'s Open Doors Report that 5.9% of African-American students studied abroad during the 2016-2017 academic year in the US. At Howard we are working to help increase that national average by ensuring that HU know ail of their study abroad options! YOU can and should be a part of this movement! 2. WHEN CAN | STUDY ABROAD? After completing two semesters on Howard's campus, students are eligible to apply for study abroad. Note: Students can study abroad until the fall semester of their senior year (or until they reach their final 15 credits). IMPORTANT: Prepare tostudy abroad NOW! The more electives & language courses that you need, the more ‘options that you have for study abroad locations. 2, CAN ALL MAJORS STUDY ABROAD AT HOWARD? HU students can study abroad for two semesters (or one entire academic year) and during the summer, if there are courses abroad that are approved by HU faculty and fit into the student's scheme. The School of Business, Biology Dept., and other departments may have their own criteria for study abroad (e.g. a separate review process, accreditation requirements, different eligibility requirements), please inquire with your dept. directly and immediately. 3. WHERE CANI GO? HU Students can study in the following regions: Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Canada, Europe, Latin America, the South Pacific, & the Middle East. Visit our website for more information! 4, HOW MUCH DOES IT COST Studying abroad is more affordable that you may realize at Howard! The cost of programs range between 12,000 and $25,000, so it can be nearly the same price as staying on campus or less! Additionally, the Study Abroad Office has a list of available financial aid for study abroad that can be accessed on the website. 5. CAN | USE FUNDING ISSUED THROUGH HOWARD? Yes, during the academic school year all financial aid is applicable to the Cost of study abroad. This is NOT the case during the summer and NO funding options are available through HU (not even outside loans). 6. DO | HAVE TO KNOW A FOREIGN LANGUAGE? No, not always! You can travel to many different countries and take class in English, as well as, classes to learn the local language. There are several programs that do require minimum amount of language fluency however. 7. WHERE WOULD I LIVE WHILE ABROAD? HU students have multiple options including: home stay, an apartment, or on campus. The choice is up to the student & dependent on the options available for each program. 8. WHAT TYPES OF PROGRAMS ARE AVAILABLE ABROAD? Great Question! There are Exchange programs, internships, semester program, multi-country semester programs, summer programs, J-Term programs (offered case-by-case), faculty led programs and Internat onal Alternative Spring Break programs at Howard! HU students must tra ‘ns that are do not have a US State Department Travel Warning, Often travel abroad is safer or, no more risky than living in the US. We require that HU students register in the Smart Traveleggagnroliment Program (STEP Program) with the US State Department to receive regional notifications on safety
