Medical Therapeutics is an applied course designed to prepare students to pursue careers in therapeutic
and nursing services. Upon completion of this course, a proficient student will be able to identify careers
in therapeutics services; assess, monitor, evaluate, and report patient/client health status; and identify
the purpose and components of treatments.

Instructional Philosophy:

Students will be given challenging real-world projects and assignments typical of the healthcare field.
High quality work is expected, and students will be given opportunities to redo work until it meets
standards. Major projects will be presented to the class and in some situations, to health professionals
or health consumers. Students will often work in teams but will be expected to complete individual
assignments in relation to the team’s work.

Course Goals/Standards:

Complete the TN Course Standards with proficiency

Major Assignments:

Risk Management, Quality Assurance, Safety, Infection Control:

Examine policies and procedures related to therapeutic equipment safety, quality control monitoring,
and evaluation. Synthesize information into a digital or written presentation to instruct appropriate staff
on the importance of safety practices and the implementation of quality control processes according to
policy.

Health Care Systems & Settings:

Differentiate between the common members of the patient care team summarizing the individual roles
and the interrelatedness of the team members as it relates to quality patient care. Prepare an
informative artifact to explain the concept of team-based care to a patient.

A&P-Pathophysiology & Disease Processes:

Relate a therapeutic procedure/treatment to a specific body system & disease process.

Business and Professional Communication and Documentation:

Evaluate factors that contribute to effective communication and explain how these factors contribute to
the development of quality patient care. Using role-play, demonstrate practices to effectively manage
communication barriers, cultural differences and clients with special needs.

Patient Assessment and Preparation:

Practice and Demonstrate mastery of medical terminology, concepts and skills utilized to monitor
patient/client status.

Patient Education:

Develop a patient health education plan including health screenings, preventive measures, signs and
symptoms of exacerbation of disease/disorder/injury, pharmacological needs, and support systems.
Include citations from at least three medical texts.

Assessment and Grading Plan:

All assignments are designed to show whether students have met the standards for the course.

Classwork/ Homework and Journal Assignments 10%

Projects 50%

Labs and Exams 40%

Additional Components:

Policies and Procedures • Homework is given daily/weekly and is due at the time requested – Late work
results in a 10% deduction per day. No name work will be deducted 10%. • You are expected to bring
pen and paper every day to class. • Group discussion with respect to fellow colleagues is required and
expected. • 100% on Safety Tests. • No cell phones are allowed in class and must be put away in
backpack or purse. • No one is allowed to leave after class has started unless an absolute emergency •
Food is not allowed in class except for water (must be brought in before bell) • Harassment of any kind
will not be tolerated. Immediate disciplinary action will take place.
