So I’ve finally come around to start posting on AO3 (probably

thanks to the constant reminders due to the website being down
because of the DDoS attacks, nice pr campaign ), but I’m a
ANXIOUSSAILORSOLDIER
little confused because it enforces the chapter sequence, like,
you can’t have a “chapter 0” or a prologue. Both other websites
I use for fanfics don’t have that problem and let you write the
chapter sequence yourself.

Kind of annoying. Yeah I did read about the skins but they seem
useless because they can be overridden on multiple occasions
and the prologue remains “chapter 1”.

For now I had to put the “prologue” into the chapter notes but
if anyone has any other tips I would be most grateful

@violetvelourr I think your solution works great for a brief
prologue! As a reader, I wouldn’t mind it at all. As a writer,
the only time I’ve used a prologue, it was as a full-length
chapter, and I had the same problem, and ended up just removing
all my own chapter numbers and letting the prologue become
chapter 1.

This reddit thread suggests another idea - write and post the
prologue as a separate story, and then tie it together with the
bigger story using a series. Could be a good option, if your
readers don’t mind doing slightly more clicking, and if you
don’t mind the prologue kind of ‘orbiting’ your overall story
(some readers might skip it / not notice it).

Naruto looks at the apartment door in the non-descript housing

block built to hold shinobi for short periods of time.
Transitional housing is what the Sandaime had once called it
when he took Naruto on one 
of 
their frequent walks, a place of
being in between ranks or situations. Shinobi were often in a
state of flux, and this was where they went when they were
promoted to Jonin and didn’t have a new place in the Jonin
accommodations open or moving from the ANBU to the regular
shinobi ranks.

That had to be how Kakashi-sensei ended up here, Naruto thought.

What little he knew of Kakashi-sensei’s background came from
Jiraiya; and Jiraiya had told him several times that Kakashi was

Kakashi-sensei had been the Pervy Sage’s student’s student, and

with all the stories he heard about the Yellow Flash and his
genius, how could Kakashi not be awesome with that sort of
sensei? Did that mean Naruto was going to be extra awesome
because he had a genius student of a genius for a sensei and a
sannin training him? 

Of course, he thought, I am going to be the strongest ninja

Konoha has ever seen and the best Hokage.

Well, maybe.

The door and the building don’t give off the appearance of being
a wildly successful shinobi.

He knocks.

“Come in, Naruto,” a voice calls from inside. “I’ve got my hands
full.”

He carefully turns the door handle and hopes that this isn’t
another mean trick, but it opens easily and wonderful smells
greet him. Kakashi-sensei does too, because it is only one room
with a tiny kitchenette next to the door, and he is pulling
something out of the very small oven.

Sensei smiles at Naruto, “Welcome!”

“Ah, thanks for inviting me over for dinner. Is it just me?”

Naruto asks. He isn’t sure if another person would fit in the
space. It is just a bed, a chair, a desk, several bookshelves
and a kitchenette.

“Yeah, Sakura is working double shifts this week at the

hospital, but you are back home and today is a special day,”
Kakashi says, working a cutting board onto the short countertop.
He places the rolled chashu on it and grabs a knife to slice the Σ
