for you and others may be hard. Don’t worry if you cannot answer, we
just want you to try your best. **

**We will play an alphabet game now. I will point to letters and I want
you to tell me what letters they are. It’s OK if you don’t know all of
them. Just do your best.**
*Show the child a copy of the letter chart. Point to the first letter in the
first row, and ask the child:*
*Continue to point to the letters in the first row one-by-one until you
complete Row 1. If the child gets stuck on a letter for more than 5
seconds, mark it as incorrect, point to the next letter and encourage the
child to continue. Mark responses as the child identifies each letter.*

**I would like you to read a story for me. When I say 'begin,' start
reading aloud from the title on this page. Try to read each word. If you
come to a word you don't know, I'll tell it to you. Be sure to try to do
your best. Do you understand what I want you to do?**
*Say: "Begin" and start the timer when the student starts to read the
first word out loud. Follow along on the record sheet. Cross out words
read incorrectly until the student finishes reading the entire passage.
Stop the timer as soon as the child finishes reading the last word of the
story. If the child does not read the first 5 words correctly, thank the
child for their effort and stop the task. If the child was able to read the
first 5 words, then let them continue reading the story and continue
marking words read incorrectly.*
*If the student pronounces a word incorrectly but keeps reading, do not
correct him or her. If the child hesitates for 5 seconds on a word, tell
the student the word, mark it incorrect, and continue.*
*After the story has been completed, leave the story card with the child
and say: *
