CHECK FOR UNDERSTANDING:

Enzymes

Direction: Read and answer the following questions about enzymes.

1. Complete the following paragraph about enzymes.

proteins
Enzymes are ___________ biological catalysts
that act as __________________, which speed up the
biochemical reactions in living organisms. The enzymes themselves are not
changed in these reactions so they could be reused.
proteins
Enzymes are ___________ -- each one only work or bind to a type of substrate.
denatured
At high temperatures and extreme pH levels, enzymes are ________________.

[2 marks]

2. Briefly explain why enzyme’s shape is important to its function.

The shape of an enzyme directly effects its function. Its shape determines which chemical
________________________________________________________________
reaction will speed up. The enzymes active site and substrate should fit like lock and key
________________________________________________________________
to initiate a reaction.

3. Using the graphs, explain how temperature and pH level affect the rate of enzyme
activity.

a. Temperature

Temperature is directly proportional to enzyme activity. As the temperature increases,

______________________________________________________________
so does the rate of enzyme activity. At the enzyme's optimum temperature, an optimum
______________________________________________________________
activity is reached. Raising the temperature can speed up the activity, however, if the
______________________________________________________________
temperature is extremely high, it can cause an enzyme to lose its shape (denature)

and stop the process or the speeding up of the reaction.

b. pH level

Enzymes for different functions have different optimum pH levels. The optimum pH of
______________________________________________________________
an enzyme varies with where it works. The enzyme activity increases as the pH level
______________________________________________________________
increases. In extreme pH levels, there will be a sharp decrease in enzyme activity
______________________________________________________________
because the enzyme will lose its shape (denatured), and stop working.
