Questions


Goal: When the student is presented with a social question (e.g., “What is your name”, “How old are you?”) the
student will reply accurately within 3 seconds.

Instructional Procedure: Sit the student across from the instructor and present the instruction “[social question]”.
When the student answers the question correctly within 3 seconds, provide behavior specific praise and
reinforcement. When the student errors, correct using a verbal model or textual cue and repeat the trial until the
student is able to respond to the question independently. Fade prompts over subsequent teaching opportunities.
Differentially reinforce responses demonstrated with the lowest level of prompting.

Teaching Steps:
1. Set 1 (teach in sets of 3 at a time)
a. With visuals
b. Without visual
2. Set 2 - Steps a-b RR: all mastered social questions between each teaching step
3. Set 3 RR
4. Set 4 RR ETC.
5. Ask questions in reverse (e.g., What is your mom’s name, Who is your mom, Who is Jane)
6. Do you like/What’s your favourite program

Suggested Teaching Strategies:
• Initially, teach questions that sound different from each other
• At first, these questions will be learned through rote memorization
• Once the program is almost mastered, test novel questions to probe for language generalization (e.g., “What city
do you live in” vs. “Where do you live”), as well as probe the same taught questions to see if the student will
generate novel answers (e.g., “What is your favourite tv show?”)
• If the student is acquiring these questions quickly, it is possible to teach in sets of 3 questions at once.

Suggested Target Responses:
Teach functional social questions that the student may encounter in his/her everyday life. Examples:
What is your name?
How old are you?
When is your birthday?
How are you today?
Where do you live? (answer: city)
What school do you go to?
What grade are you in?
Who is your teacher?
What is your mommy’s name?
What is your daddy’s name?
What’s your brother’s/sister’s name?
What’s your last name?
What is your address? (this may not be age appropriate)
What is your phone number? (this may not be age appropriate)
What’s your favourite ___ (drink, food, tv show, movie, colour, etc.)?
