DISCOURSE & GENRE

1. What is Discourse and Genre?

Discourse is the use of language in text and context. Genre in linguistics

refers to the type and structure of language typically used for a particular

purpose in a particular context.

2. What Is Relationship Between Discourse and Genre?

“Discourse analysis is Genre analysis” When we analyze discourses, of

course we will specify them into more specific types from the characteristics

of each discourse. For example The specific type of discourses is called as

genre.

3. Why Should We Use Genre to Analyze Discourse

Discourse is language in use. It is huge and almost unlimited. So, when we

want to analyze discourses, we need a limitation to limit the unlimited things.

4. Definition of Genre

Genre in discourse analysis refers to categories that define the research

based on its subject of study. Genre is the foundation of all research, and if the

readers know which genre research belongs to, they understand the

information better. Genre helps the audience comprehend what to anticipate

from the research work. Genres ensure that the readers have access to

organized data, simple to understand. Additionally, genres are essential to

researchers because they provide general organizational patterns that assist

them in arranging what they say and why they say it. Moreover, genres allow

researchers to specialize in one genre or dabble in others, whichever delivers

their message most straightforwardly and keeps it interesting for the users.

5. Type of Genre

a. Communicative Purpose

The primary goal and intention of anyone involved in an act of

communication on a given occasion, which is generally intended to be

recognized by the other participants.

b. Generic Structure

This generic structure is needed to create sentence patterns that are

presented in sub-sections. Generic structure is arranged with the aim that a

text can achieve its goals.
