The Abdus Salam
Course on
Natural Circulation Phenomena and Modelling
in Water-Cooled Nuclear Reactors
25 - 29 June 2007
Miramare -Trieste, Italy
‘Tho Abdus Salam Intemational Contre for Theorotical Physics (ICTP, Trieste), in cooperation with the
Intemational Atomic Energy Agency (AEA, Vienna) is organizing a Course on Natural Circulation
Phenomena and Modelling in Water-Cooled Nuclear Reactors io beheld from 25 to 28 Juno 2007
in Teste aly
Nuclear power has proven ils viablty in many IAEA Member States, Water cooled nuclear power
plants [ight water reactors and heavy water feactors] represent 84% of the global nuclear power
apacty, and advanced designs are being developed in several |AEA Member States to help meet
future energy needs. Common goals for advanced designs are high reliably and competiove
onomics while meeting stingent saety requirements,
Passive safely systems based on natural circulation are key to several evolutionary water-cooled
esigns and many innovative water-cooled reactor designs, Some designs also ullize natural
‘eultion to move core heal during normal operation,
‘Tho objective of the Course isto provide patipants with instruction on:
+ natural circulation during reactor star-up and operation, methods of analyses and governing
‘2quations, passive systom itiaton and operation, flow sab, scaling laws for expormonts
+ phenomena that inuence natural ercuation (eg. Behaviour in large pools of liquid, effects of
hon-condensable gasses on condensation heat transfer, condensation on containment
‘Structures, behaviour of containment emergency systems, thermo-fuld dyramics ana pressure
Grops in various configurations, steamiquid Interaction, gravity driven cooling, quid
{amperature stratification, behaviour of emergency heal exchangers and isolation condenser,
‘Sratiication and mixing of Boron)
+ Sxpermental databases for these phenomens;
{methodology for determining thereby of passive systems that lize natural crculaton
Scionsts and post-graduate students from all counties which are members of the United Nations,
UNESCO or IAEA may attend the Course, provided they hold science or enginaerng degree (@.9. ih
Dhysles, mechanical. chemical or nucoar enginaoxng) or equivalon qualification A base Anowiedge
In therma-nydrauls, ud mechanics and heat vansfer Is required. The Training Course is intondod
for graduate engineers working n the nuclea field and post-graduate students wishing to become
‘more informed and involved in natural erultion and ie appcaton In nuciar powor plans. Logics
limit the number of participants 10.25. ‘Since ICTP activites are conducted in English, partelpanis
should have an adequate working knowedge of tis language
‘The main purpose ofthe Centre is to help researchers from developing counties through a programme
of training activities within @ framework of inlernational cooperation: however. scientists from
Seveloped countries are also welcome to attend
‘As rule, travel and subsistence expenses of paticipanis should be borne by their home institution
However, limited funds are avaiable for some parbcipants who are nationals of, and working in, 3
developing county, to be selected by the Organizers. Any suppor is avaliable oly for those attending
the entre acuty. ‘Mere i no registration fee. The designation ofa parspant wil be accepted only
forwarded by the offical authonty of an IAEA Member State. The applcaton for nancial suppor
should be made athe ime of designation ofthe partepant.
‘The Application Form (avaiable at hp/ledsagendes icp iVull_dsplay.php2id9206203 ) should be
‘and sent to the competent official authority (Ministry of Foreign Affairs or Nationa
‘Authority) for subsequent ansmission (o tne IAEA's Secretariat, PO. Box 100,
‘ienna international Centre A400 Vienna, Aus. fx: 4-1-2600
Closing date fr receipt of the applicators is 30 March 2007.
