The Great Awakening Daily Life in the Thirteen Colonies
The Great Awakening is a series of religious
Revivals, starting mostly in New England. A popular
spreaker is Jonathan Edwards, who warned people about
the dangers of ignoring religion and its teachings. The
Great Awakening greatly changed the way people ideas
about the government, because they believed that if
everyone is seen the same way in the eyes of god, they
should all be seen the same way by their government.

Thirteen English Colonies
Men
The day for men on the farm starts the moment the sun rises.
They have a quick breakfast with their family of porridge and
beer. They would then head out onto the fields and start
working. The work depended on the time of year. In spring
they till and plant the fields, while in fall they gather the
harvest. In between they took care of livestock, fixed the
house and fences, and chopped wood. Men in the city
work almost as much. They generally have tradesmen jobs
such as blacksmiths, tailors, coopers, wheelwrights, and
shoemakers. They work up to 16 hours a week 6 days a
week.
Women
Women had the role of managing the household. They raise
children, sew clothes, cook meals, and weave cloth. They
generally work from sunrise to sunset. Women in the city,
however, actually get a chance to leave the house and
socialize. They even worked some jobs like seamstress and
nurses.
Children
Children would start work as soon as they are old enough to
they generally work the same jobs as their parents on the farm,
girls in the house and boys on the fields. This let them learn

Climate/Geography
The climate in these colonies is relatively cold,
with freezing winters and mild summers. The soil is hard
and rocky, so farming is difficult and not advised as a job.
The cold climate may sound horrible, but think again. The
cold means less disease is spread, so New England is a
a very healthy place.
Religion
The 2 main religious groups here are Puritans and
Separatists. The Puritans wanted to “purify”christianity
without England persecuting them. These colonies are
mostly controlled by the church, and missing church has
terrible consequences. The Rhode Island colony was
founded by Roger Williams after he was banished from the
other New England colonies. In that colony, no matter what
your religion, you can vote.
Economy
The economy is mostly dependent on the ocean, making
fishing their best export. However, other jobs include
whaling, trapping, shipbuilding, and logging.
Middle Colonies

Climate/Geography
There is a relatively average temperature in these
colonies, with warm summers and cold winters. There
are coastal plains along the shore for shipping and
mountains farther inland. The climate is great for farming
things like wheat and oats, earning these colonies the
name “breadbasket”
Religion
There is many varying religions in these colonies, which
attracts immigrants from around the world. In the
Pennsylvania areas are mostly Quakers, however. They
believe that everyone could have a direct relationship with
god. Unlike other colonies, the Middle Colonies have a
peaceful relationship with the local natives.
Economy
The economy is mostly set on shipping off grain from
major ports like New York and Philadelphia. 2 of the
main crops are grains and oats. Some other craftsmen
jobs include blacksmiths, silversmiths, cobblers.
Southern Colonies

Climate/Geography
These colonies have a much more mild climate,
with hot summers and warmish winters. Most of
The land is flat plains with perfect soil for
farming. However, the hotter climate does bring
in more diseases like malaria and yellow fever.
Religion
Most everyone in the colonies are Anglican, but
the Maryland colony has mostly catholics, as it
was founded by Lord Baltimore. The Religions
have less of a impact here as everyone is much
more spread out by the farmland.
Economy
The economy is mostly fully crop based, growing
crops like rice, cotton, and tobacco. Plantation
owners originally would use indentured servants
to farm the land, but when the amount of them
ran low they switched to slaves. The colony of
Georgia was chartered for James Oglethorpe
and immigrants moved there hoping for land.
