I just love any public holiday – or bank holiday, as they’re called in my country.
It means the weekend is extra long, so everyone’s relaxed, and we always go
somewhere different each time – it’s a family tradition. We go and explore a bit more
of our local area, say, or visit a museum, or see a film. I’m never bored!

One day we celebrate in my country is April Fool’s Day! People go around playing
jokes on all their friends – but it’s not cool when my friends do it to me! My dad
doesn’t enjoy the day, either – there’s always a story in the paper that isn’t really
true, and he hates trying to guess which one it is!
Julia I love birthdays but I guess that’s because I’m only fifteen. Mum and Dad hate them!
It’s just really nice to wake up and get lots of lovely treats. Mum always makes my
favourite breakfast and if it’s a weekend we go out somewhere nice for the day.
I usually can’t sleep the night before!
Liam I don’t really do anything for Halloween but a lot of the kids in the street dress up
and go out ‘trick or treating’ in the evenings. I don’t do that, though. It’s just not
interesting at all. So I sit at home and watch TV – that’s a far better way to spend
the evening!

I think Valentine’s Day is really great – everyone gets cards and tries to guess who
they’re from because they’re not signed. I don’t usually get any cards, so my face goes
red every time anyone asks me! But I guess I don’t mind, really! And maybe I’ll get a
really nice one next year!
Deborah Every year on New Year’s Eve my family decide to have a party. We’re always
exhausted afterwards! There are often over 60 people in the house and Mum’s
always worried that there isn’t enough food or drink so she doesn’t relax at all. Of
course it’s fine in the end – but we’re not going to do it again next year!
