Ans. 1 Very short type questions. [5X1=5]

a) Cadherins, selectins, immunoglobulin superfamily and integrins
b) Pluripotency describes the ability of a cell to develop into the three primary germ cell layers of the
early embryo and therefore into all cells of the adult body, but not extra-embryonic tissues such as the
placenta.
c) Oncogenes and oncogenic virus
d) Cadherins, selectins, immunoglobin superfamily and integrins
e) A system called “paracrine signaling” allows cells to communicate with each other by releasing
signaling molecules that bind to and activate surrounding cells.

Ans. 2 Short Answer types Question [4X2.5=10]

a) Leukemia is cancer of the body's blood-forming tissues, including the bone marrow and the lymphatic
system
b) Imaging tests used in diagnosing cancer may include a computerized tomography (CT) scan, bone
scan, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), positron emission tomography (PET) scan, ultrasound and
X-ray, among others. Biopsy. During a biopsy, your doctor collects a sample of cells for testing in the
laboratory.
c) Signal transduction is the process by which a chemical or physical signal is transmitted through a cell
as a series of molecular events
d) Apoptosis is described as an active, programmed process of autonomous cellular dismantling that
avoids eliciting inflammation. Necrosis has been characterized as passive, accidental cell death
resulting from environmental perturbations with uncontrolled release of inflammatory cellular
contents.
Ans. 3 Long Answer types Question [2X7.5=15]

a) Intrinsic Pathway. The intrinsic signaling pathways that initiate apoptosis involve a diverse array of non-
receptor-mediated stimuli that produce intracellular signals that act directly on targets within the cell and
are mitochondrial-initiated events.

b) The malignant cell is characterized by: acceleration of the cell cycle; genomic alterations; invasive
growth; increased cell mobility; chemotaxis; changes in the cellular surface; secretion of lytic factors, etc.
Morphological and functional characteristics of the malignant cell.
