SF6 Gas-insulated Switchgear ELK SP-14 / 2120

Retrofit circuit-breaker with operating mechanism, 300 kV

A new level of performance

Retrofit means upgrading an existing system with modern components, in order to optimize technical, safety relevant,
economical and ecological factors. The ABB retrofit solution covers exchange of the components which have been
subject to the most wear during the many years in operation. One of the core switchgear components is the circuit
breaker. Consequently, a retrofit circuit breaker solution is a cost efficient method to upgrade and extend the life of
switchgear. The result is a major improvement in reliability, safety, maintenance reduction and performance -
an outstanding way to optimize the return on investment.

Design and Layout Hydro-mechanical spring operating mechanism

It combines the advantages of the hydraulic operating me-

chanism with those of the spring energy storage type. Due to
this combination of working principles it enjoys the following
advantages:

−− Interrupting guaranteed even if disc spring is broken

Interruption/Opening
After actuation of the trip coil, the change-over valve is swit-
ched hydraulically to its open position, thereby connecting
the bottom side of the output piston with the low-pressure
reservoir. The output piston now moves the circuit-breaker to
its open position. The hydraulic force retains the output piston
in the open position.

Closing
After actuation of the closing coil, the change-over valve is
hydraulically switched to its closed position, thereby introdu-
cing high pressure to the bottom side of the output piston.
The system pressure is now on both sides of the output pis-
ton. The output piston moves the circuit-breaker to its closed
position because the area on the bottom side of the output
piston is greater than on the top (differential piston principle).
Through the choice of pressure/area ratio, the opening and
closing energy of the operating mechanism is optimally mat-
ched to the requirements of the circuit-breaker. The hydraulic
force retains the output piston at the closed position. In case
of insufficient hydraulic pressure an interlock pin prevents the
circuit-breaker from moving towards the open position.
Fig. 3: Operating mechanism
The energy storage is achieved through the use of a disk
spring which is charged by three equal storage cylinders
loaded by a disk spring column. The stored operation sequen-
ces are O-CO or CO-CO. The spring column of the operating vates the pump motor following switching operations

supervised by mechanical auxiliary contacts.
Recharging
The recharching of stored energy, e.g. after a switching ope-
ration, is performed by a hydraulic pump. The compact hyd-
raulic pump unit, consisting of pump motor, gears, pump and
an oil drain valve, is externally flanged to the output cylinder.
The oil gauges are situated on both sides of the lowpressure
reservoir for easy viewing.

The monitoring module permanently monitors the ener-

gy stored in the spring column by means of limit switches.
Due to the direct coupling of the limit switches to the spring
motion, the energy content is measured directly. The mea-
surement is independent of temperature. The limit switches
interlock the close and trip coils of the pilot valves to prevent
operating sequences from occurring when the required energy
is not yet stored in the spring column. Another switch acti-
