Raising their hands IV. PROCEDURE! PRESENTATION (Discussion) A. Dofine Correlation Coefficlont To start our discussion let's dofine correlation coofficient first. ‘Who wants to read the definition of correlation coefficient? Okay, student 6, ‘Thank you! ‘So, we can determine the correlation of the two variables using scatterplots. The strength of the correlation depends on the direction of the data in scatterpiot, if the two variables move in the same direction whether it increases or decreases as long as it ‘moves in the same direction it has a positive correlation. (Show figure 1) Then, if the two variables move in an opposite direction it has negative correlation. (Show fgure 2) Lastly, if the two variables don't show any increasing or decreasing ‘movement in scatterplot that means it has no correlation. (Show figure 3) To determine the form of the correlation, if the dots in scatterplots form a straight line that means it has a linear relationship just like on the figure 4. (Show figure 4) While curvilinear relationship, it forms curve line due to the one variable that does not increase at a constant rate. (Show figure 5) Who wants to read the correlation by strength? Okay, student 7, Thank you! To determine the strength of a correlation we will compute the relationship of the two or more variables or the correlation coefficient using Pearson's r. The correlation will said to be perfect correlation if the computed value from the Pearson's ris 1 whether itis negative or positive. To solve it easily and faster we will use Microsoft Excel. B. Compute the Correlation Coefficient using Microsoft Excel. Just prepare your laptop/computer to those who have it, To those who do not have, just focus and make sure to follow every step that I'm going to do. Raising hand: Student 6: Correlation is the patterns or relationships in scatterplots. All correlations have three properties: direction, form and strength. To determine the strength of a correlation you have to look for its numerical value. ‘While the direction of the correlation is determined by it positive or negative relationship. Ralsing hands... ‘Student 7: The strength of a correlation is also known as correlation coefficient that indicates how strong the relationship of two or more variables. ‘The strength is determined by the numerical value; A correlation of 1, whether itis positive or negative, itis said to be a perfect correlation. ‘So, this is the correlation coefficient interpretation table. (Show figure 6) Size of correlation is where we should look, once we are done computing for the strength of the relationship of the two or more variables using Pearson's r formula, (Show figure 7) This is the formula for Pearson’s Correlation (¢) Where: N= number of samples X= scores of the variable x y— Scores of the variable y7 Ex Sum of the variables x Yy— Sum of the variable y Day — Sum of the product of the variable x and the an y x? ~ Sum of the squares of the variable x Ly? — Sum of the squares ofthe variable y Who wants to read? Okay, student 8 ‘Thank you! Ifthe result of the computed Pearson's ris positive that means that the relationship of the two variables has a positive correlation. ifr is negative that means that the relationship of the two variables has a negative correlation, So, open your Microsoft Excel software. By rating your knowledge or expertise in using Excel what rate it would it be? Just type 1-10 is the lowest and 10 is the highest Since you have an idea on how to use the Excel we can now proceed. Let's have an example: The height and shoe size of ten (10) selected students in a class; (show table 1) First, we are going to let the height as our x variable and shoe size as oury variable. Then based on the formula we need to solve for xy or the product of x and y. To do that, type equal sign then select the x value then type asterisk (*) and then select the y value then enter. To amply it to other just select the lower right corner then hold and drag it down, Did you follow? ‘Second, to solve for the squared of x just type equal sign then select the x value then type the conjunction sign (*) and 2 then Ralsing thelr hands.. Student 8: I the linear correlation coefficient ris positive, the relationship between the variables has a positive correlation. In this case, if one variable increases, the other variable also tends to increase. Ifris negative, the linear relationship between the variables has ‘a negative correlation. In this case, if one variable increases, the other variable tends to decrease. Rating... Yes sirl ‘enter. To apply itto all just do the same as what we did earlier. Select the lower right comer of the cell then hold and drag it down. Third, to solve for the squared of y. The same procedure in squared of x. ‘We're not done yet, we also need to solve for summation. To do that, select the cell below and type equal sign then type sum, open parenthesis then selects all the x value by selecting the first value then hold and drag down after that type close parenthesis and then enter. To apply it to all, drag the lower right comer then hold and drag to the right After doing that we will now substitute all the value needed in the formula. That is the long method, so now we will do the short method to ‘compute for correlation coefficient or the Pearson’s correlation r. Here we will be using the data analysis. So, click the Data then look for Data Analysis. If you do not have it don't worry, just follow these three (3) steps to activate the Data Analysis in your Excel. First, click the File and there look for Option and then click it and the Excel option will pop up. Second, click the Add-ins and in lower part you will see the Manage then click the Excel Add-ins then select Go and then Add- ins tab will pop up. Third, check the Analysis ToolPack and Analysis ToolPack - VBA then select okay. in Data and in the last part you will see the So, click the Data Analysis, look for the correlation then click it. ‘The correlation tab will pop up then in input range click the arrow up sign then select all the data by holding and dragging the mouse. Then cick the arrow down sign. After that select the circle in output range and click the arrow up sign on the right of the ‘output range then select any cell that you want to place the answer. Click the arrow down sign then select okay. ‘As you can see it has the same answer. Did you understand, class? C. Appreciate the use of Technology Application In creating conclusion. Next, we will be going to compute for correlation and p value using Microsoft Excel to determine if itis significant or not. ‘Again, go in data and select Data Analysis. Look for Regression and select it then click okay. All we need to do is to input the all the data. Input y range, by selecting all the data of y. Input x range, by selecting all the data of x. Make sure to select labels if you include it in the data then click okay. ‘After that, it wll give you all the resutt that you need. ‘As you can see the muttple r in regression is the same on what we computed on Pearson's Yes sir! [For p value, under Anova table the value of significance F is our p- | value. Now what we're going to do is we will use alpha 0.05, the | decision rules as follows: our p-value is less than 0.05 then the correlation is statistically significant. Since 0.053 is not less than 0.08 that indicates the correlation is Not significant ‘The correlation coefficient of 0.6245 is statistically not significant that means that there is no significant relationship between height shoe size, We can write the results as follows: ‘There is no significant relationship between the height and shoe | size of ten selected students, r(8) = 0.6245, p < 0.05. ‘That's itt Did you understand, class? For your activity, compute for correlation coefficient/ Pearson's correlation (1), p-value and write the resutts. ‘The height and weight of thirteen (13) selected students in a class; Height (cm) ‘Weight (kg) 162 Ea 160 70 156 65 164 60 149) 37 164 82 150 42 156 65 162 60 158 52 155 48 162 50 160 53 Criterta 0-No answer 1 Answer only 3 - Aswer with Excel 5 - Organize work, with use of Excel and written result. C. Generalization Thave some questions to assess if you really understand the topic. 1. How can we apply this topic in the modem world? You as a student? 2. Why s it important to know on how to compute for correlation coefficient and its significance? 3. Rate your experience in using Microsoft Excel to compute for correlation coefficient and its test of significance, then why? D. Evaluation For your quiz, wait for the link of google form on our discord channel E. Assignment We don't have an assignment this time since this is our last topic. Just do the remaining activities and quizzes. Understood sirt Understand? (Okay, open your camera for your attendance, Okay, that's all for today's discussion you may now leave the room, ‘Thank you, sirt Thank you, class! Prepared by: , Checked by: JOSAVAL. RICO MR.
