We are going to talk about a volcano located on the border of Chile and Argentina. It is call
Copahue, and it was categorized as a stratovolcano. Its summit is about 2953 meters and
has an elevation of 9688 ft. Twentieth-century eruptions from the crater lake have ejected
pyroclastic rocks and chilled liquid sulfur fragments. Its last known eruption happened last
year. The common activity includes gas-and-ash plumes, crater incandescence, and local
ashfall.

(CATA)
On December the 22nd of 2012 occurred one of the largest eruptions of this volcano. The
eruptive cycle was dominated by a pulsatory behavior, with a continuous decrease in the
released energy since the onset of the eruption in the morning of that day, when the
eruptive column reached its maximum height. The volcanic plume extended for almost
250 km toward the east southeast of the volcano and was characterized by a mean with of
20 km in proximal areas and 35 km in distal areas.

(UMA)
A second, less intense, eruptive pulse occurred during the afternoon of December 22,
leading to the development of a smaller volcanic plume. Eruption products can be
classified as: i) ballistic bombs and blocks emitted from the eruptive center, and ii) fallout
pyroclasts deposited directly from the volcanic plume, including large flattened juvenile
fragments of highly vesiculated scoria.

(MARI)
The most common consequences of a volcano eruption are spectacular fire fountains,
incandescent lava flows, clouds of ash, or bubbling mud pools. Besides, they can result in
additional threats to health, such as floods, mudslides, power outages, drinking water
contamination, and wildfires. In the case of the Copahue, one of its consequences was
that the 500 habitants of the city of Caviahue had to be evacuated after its activation,
which caused numerous volcanic crises.

(SOFI)
Argentina has a total of 40 active volcanoes, it is very common to find them in provinces
such as Jujuy, Salta, Catamarca, Mendoza, Neuquén, Río Negro, Chubut y Santa Cruz. In
addition, several share a border with Chile, like the one we mentioned earlier.
