2 Safety Instructions
To avoid personal injury and equipment damage, follow the safety regulations stated
below.
Additionally, you should observe:
The presence of this symbol indicates that the machine or component used
has the potential to cause severe injury or death.
Personnel
Preparation, installation, commissioning, operation, maintenance, and servicing may
exclusively be performed by skilled persons only.
All persons working on the measuring system are required to observe the safety hints
and know the parts of the technical documentation relevant to their work.
The supervisor is responsible for instructing his operators to observe all regulations
and instructions given.
Parameter Changes
The measuring system's functionality is determined by parameters, which must
exclusively be changed by persons familiar with the measuring system operating
principles (e.g. after training by Schenck Process). Parameters incorrectly set may
cause injuries or damage to the machine whenever a user control system is
connected. They can also adversely affect weighing operation.
Password
Software parameters are protected from unintended change by password. The
measuring system user has to ensure safe password handling.

3 Overview
The Overview chapter explains the principle functions of the DISOCONT system used
in conjunction with a feeder or meter.
The DISOCONT is designed for continuous measuring and control tasks as well as
discontinuous batching.
The system also performs all weighing and processing functions required for the
measuring and feeding of bulk solids.
• Steel
• Basic Materials
• Cement
• Food
• Chemical
In connection with the corresponding mechanical equipment, the following systems
are supported:
• Belt weighers
• Weighfeeders
• Filling systems
• Volumetric/Synchronous Mode
Designed as special feature of volumetric mode, this mode ensures smooth
change-over from gravimetric to volumetric mode.

3.7 Control
The DISOCONT controls the material discharge from the loss-in-weight feeder in a
closed or open-loop. There are speed controlled feed units (e.g. feed screws and
spindles) and amplitude controlled feed units (e.g. vibro feeds). There are speed-
controlled feed units, e.g. feed screws and spindles, and amplitude-controlled feed
units, e.g. vibro feeders.
The "Control" figure shows the loss-in-weight feeder control principle. Set point is
compared to actual feed rate by the SET/ACT difference, routed to controller RP. The
controller varies feed unit (F) feed rate until actual value corresponds to setpoint. The
controller is equipped with additional pre-control, which enables set point variations to
be acquired faster.
Fig.: Control
• Disturbances resulting from the weighing process, such as, discharge errors
caused by inhomogeneous material, varying material properties, or feed unit
non-linearities.
The first type is available, both in measuring signal and material flow. The second type
exclusively affects the measuring signal and must not enter into measurement value
evaluation or control system. To prevent this from occurring, this kind of disturbance
has to be recognized and classified.
The figure below shows disturbance patterns of the second type:
• Filling without fill control: The (DAE)'s Disturbance Auto Eliminator permits
material to be refilled with no need to change operating mode ("basket filling").
With normal eliminator calibration, this has to take place smoothly without
delay. A special setting enables even more sophisticated filling processes to
be realized.
To simulate the conditions during filling, the fill unit control magnitude is adapted to fill
weight.
This helps to increase feeding accuracy during the filling phase and ensures smooth
change-over to gravimetric mode.
See parameter 10.11 "Material flow compensation"
3.10 Batching
In batch mode, a preselected amount of material is discharged. If batch setpoint is
reached, batching process is complete.
Batching can be performed in any mode and with any variant.
The figure below shows the batching sequence of a controlled system:
Fig.: Batching
The represented sections mean:
0 : Start batch
1 : Stop batch
2 : Continue stopped batch
3 : Continuously decrease set feed rate
4 : Stop batch automatically if preset amount has been batched.
3.11 Linearization
If a vibro feeder is used as feed unit, we have to consider that the feed rate of the
vibro feeder's feed rate range is non-linear. Feed rate behaves progressively as a
function of amplitude. The "Linearization" figure shows the correlation between feed
rate I and amplitude S.
Linearization ensures a higher control quality over the entire setting range.
Overshooting in the case of setpoint steps is avoided. In volumetric mode, setpoint
and feed rate actual value are fairly balanced.

4 Control
This chapter describes the DISOCONT control in the case of controlled discharge
weighing. The DISOCONT and a connected loss-in-weight feeder can be controlled
either via a local control unit VLB, Easyserve software from a PC or a local controol
box VLG (emergency mode).
DISOCONT and connected loss-in-weight feeder can be controlled either via
• Parameter settings
• Setpoints
• Counter readings
• Feed index
This manual uses the abbreviations "<Key Name...> key", e.g. <Return> key. Cursor
keys are called "cursor <UP> or <DOWN>".
The DISOCONT is operated with the use of function keys (yellow), keypad (white) and
Return key (red).
Function keys are assigned in accordance with the specific control situation. The
particular function is displayed over or right next to the key.
You can increase display contrast by operating key <.> and single or repeated
operation of the <UP> cursor. Use <.> keys and <DOWN> cursor to decrease display
contrast.
On standard, the background lighting cuts off after 15 minutes and comes on again
after operation of any key. Use shortcut <.> and cursor key <Left> for steady light.
Shortcut <.> and cursor key <Right> lets you return to default state.
The state selected last is maintained also after power failure.

5 Commissioning
This chapter describes the commissioning of DISOCONT and connected loss-in-
weight feeder. The application is controlled discharge weighing.
Commissioning for fill weighing applications can be derived from the text with very
slight modifications.
Observing the sequence below helps to avoid errors:
1. Testing Control Functions
2. Enter parameters.
3. Calibrate hopper.
5.1 Installation
Depending on equipment supplied, the DISOCONT assemblies come preassembled,
e. g. mounted on scale or in control cubicle.
NOTE: Should you use bought-in items, please see DISOCONT Hardware Manual
BVH-2085 for mounting dimensions and DISOCONT system architecture.
• Total of load cell rated capacities. Parameter P 04.05 "L/C Rated Cap.".
Prerequisites:
2. Set I * R-compensation to 0.
3. Calibrate current limitation to approx. two times the motor rated current.
Prerequisites
2. Enter setpoint.
3. Start scale.
NOTE: No material is required.
4. Read off speed value.
NOTE: Select "Speed" display in normal display using cursor keys.
5. Read off control magnitude value "Service Values" function.
NOTE: Select "Service Values" function in function distributor using cursor
keys.
6. Compute Parameter P 10.18 "Calib.Speed Red." using the following formula:
10. Set Parameter P 04.02 "Speed Charac.Value" in accordance with Spec Sheet.
• Check cabling.
• Switch ammeter into sensor current circuit: If one tooth of measuring wheel
stands before sensor, a value between 0.1 mA and 1.65 mA has to be
measured. In all other cases, measurement value is between 1.65 mA and 8
mA.
• Ambient influences.
Measuring filter is selected as a function of the last two items. Therefore, no generally
valid statement on measuring filter size can be made.
NOTE: "Rule of thumb": Big hoppers and small feed rates require longer filter times.
If no empirical system data are available, we recommend to start with default values.
Setting feed rate controller
1. Calibrate external controller (s. "Calibrating External Controller" item).
• Perform linearization.
4. If need be, start various times: If displayed values are almost equal, result can
be acquired. If values heavily vary, mechanical interference may be given
which has to be removed.
2. With smaller and higher feed rate, call up "DAE Calibration" setting program
various times.
a. highest value
b. medium feed rate value and start adaption (Parameter "DAE Adap." =
YES).
The adaption enables the eliminator to match varying operating
conditions. In some cases, the eliminator can "learn" certain
disturbance patterns which adversely affects elimination.
6 Check
6.1 Starting Check
Use "Check Meas. START" function to acquire the loss-in-weight feeder feed
constancy. After self-check, feed constancy display is normally poorer than in reality.
The reasons are interferences in measuring signal which are, however, not reflected
by the material flow.
NOTE: Used in conjunction with an additional weighing system and with "Check Meas.
START" function activated, DISOCONT can be used as independent check scale.
Measuring Principle
Weight change mean value is acquired in equal-time measuring intervals (e.g. 2 s).
After a certain number of measuring intervals (e.g. 30), measurement is complete and
restarts from the beginning. After every complete measurement, mean feed rate and
feed constancy are acquired. This means that feed constancy is a measure of chance
variation of the material amount fed in defined intervals.
You can print the results as service values or view them in form of a report.
Meaned values are computed using the following formulas:
Print Report
Report is printed if Parameter P 18.03 "Print Event" is set to "YES+CM". Printing takes
place
5. Turn on power.
If the stated resistors are used, the following service values result:
• L/C utilization approx. 75% for 2mV/V load cell characteristic value.
• L/C utilization approx. 53% for 2.85mV/V load cell characteristic value.
If raw measurement value is in specified range, measuring amplifier operates free
from fault.
Measured load display depends on scale rated data.
Note: With other resistors R1 and R2, the following raw measured value results:
Raw measured value ~ 500 * R2 / R1 [mV/V]
If parameter default values are used, display reads approx. 75 kg.
2. Adapt feed rate using the "Vol. Discharge Adaption" setting program. If
discharge characteristic heavily varies, readjust external controller.
• adjust feed rate using the "Vol. Discharge Adaption" setting program
7 Parameters
This chapter discusses the parameters available with DISOCONT and presents a list
of event messages relating to the individual parameters.
Dependencies
There are parameters whose availability depends on other parameters setting values.
These dependencies are stated in the header of every single parameter description.

Analog Input DI 4:
Hardware Configuration
Upon parametrization of the hardware used, the source determines whether unit,
channel and level must be additionally indicated or not. The following table applies:
VSE1-VSE3 DI1-DI4
DO1-DO4
EIO DI1-DI8
DO1-DO8
As you can see, with fieldbus (FB), control unit (OP), speed (v), are not assigned (--)
and the low-resolution analog input (DI4) does not require additional specification for
unit, channel or level.
Analog inputs (AI), outputs (AO) and load cell (LC) require the unit to be specified.
Digital inputs (DI), outputs (DO) and logical signals (LS) require unit, channel and level
to be specified.
The external input/output unit (EIO) readies 4 analog inputs and outputs, and 16 digital
inputs and outputs.
Example:
Parameter P 03.02 determines the scale start source.
Description Source
P 03.02 Start FB
Alternatives OP, DI
On standard, the scale is connected via fieldbus (FB). Alternatively, you can select
control unit (OP) or a digital input (DI). If DI is desired, additionally specify active unit
with channel and level (see Possible Hardware Configurations table).
Event messages
The reaction on events can be parametrized using the event classes. As a rule, all
classes (Alarm (A), Warning 1 (W1), Warning 2 (W2) and No Message (IG) can be
set. Therefore, the parameter default value suffices.
Example:
P 06.09 Power Down A Event WE 01
After power failure, event WE 01 is set as Alarm.

Parameters
Nominal flow rate is the scale characteristic value used as reference for limit values
and service displays.
Determine whether standard or user specific display formats are to be used. Preset
standard display formats are matched to scale depending on nominal flow rate .
Normally, display formats suit the practical application.
Lets you display format of flow rate actual value and setpoint.
Display format for counter 1 and pulse weighting for external counter.
See also section Details: Pulse output.
NO:
Feed index 1, no switch-over possible, OP indication "FI" is hidden.
OP:
Presetting of feed index via keyboard.
DI:
Presetting of feed index via a max. of 6 dig. inputs
(P 14.14 und P 14.16, P14.26 bis P14.19).
FB:
Presetting of feed index via field bus.
Note:
The feed index may be modified only if the scale has been switched off!
The trend is a graphical representation of measuring results over the time displayed
on control unit VLB.
The resolution is 50 * 100 pixels (value, time).

Totalizing counter 1 pulse output can alternatively be output via digital output.
Default value "---" uses the pulse output on VEA 1. The "DO" alternative uses the
configured output.
Pulse time is determined by Parameter P02.08 now as before. Values below 10ms
totally block output, and values up to 1 second are set to "High" for 1 second.
Parameter blocks for feed indices bigger than P02.21 are hidden at the operating
console and by EasyServe.
P 02.18 (Codepage) selects the character set to be used by the operator panel VLB.
The change of the character set is possible only with software VLB 20150-05 or
higher. After switching to the Cyrillic character set, characters above the normal ASCII
set will be shown as Cyrillic characters on the VLB. Special German characters and
Cyrillic characters cannot be shown at the same time.
Determine whether default or user specific parameter values are to be used for control

Only the absolute demand value is active in keyboard mode or if parameter P03.03
(preselection absolute demand value) is at OP.
Increase of the input current to the analog relative demand value of 0%.
The parameter is only active if P03.08 is at Ai or DI4.
During this period of time, after scale stop, the amount fed out is still acquired.
Limit value for agitator start-up. Agitator starts 30 seconds after setpoint has exceeded
threshold in ON state of prefeeder. Prefeeder cut-off immediately stops agitator.
Indicates the maximum hopper capacity. Value serves as reference for relative fill
weight display, Parameters P 05.07 "LIFTmin", " Parameter P 05.09 F-CONTROLmin"
and analog output.
Minimum material amount in hopper considered for control. Between values Nominal
Lift Fo and LIFT min, control is gravimetric, outside, always volumetric.
Until software version VLW20150-10, automatic filling is cut off below LIFTmin. Filling
can be started only using the "Start Filling" function. From version VLW 20150-11, see
Parameter O05.33.
Events "event Fo" and "event LIFTmin" do not affect this behaviour.
See Parameter P05.33 "LIFTmin Initial Filling".
MIN/MAX:
Controls filling process using limit values of parameters P 05.09 "F_Controlmin", P
05.10 "F_Controlmax".
PULSE:
Start filling process with P 05.09 "F_Controlmin" for the time set in P 05.20 "Pulse
Filling". Aborts at latest with limit value P 05.10 "F_Controlmax". Pulse filling also acts
on the "Filling" menu function.
PULSES:
Controls filling process using limit values "F-CONTROLmin." and "F-CONTROLmax" .
Unlike the MIN/MAX setting, the fill signal is output in form of a pulse series settable
with P 05.20/P 05.21.
NO:
No gate control, output is set to "Gate CLOSED". Menu function "START Filling" is
ineffective.
Control is active only in turned-on state of scale. After cut-off, active filling operation is
run to completion.
In case of alarm, filling aborts immediately.
If the scale has been switched on and the filling weight falls below this value, filling is
started.
If the values are smaller than 0 or smaller than the parameter P 05.06 "HUBmin" the
filling control is not activated.
If "Cancel Filling auto." has been selected, scale automatically terminates filling
process after elapse of maximum filling time (P05.15) and goes to discharge mode.
Discharge mode can be output via contact P15.21, say for control of a hooter.
See also P14.23 " DI:Discharge ON/OFF" digital input.
Setting "--" means that no feedback is required. If setting is maintained, no inputs for
unit, channel and level are necessary.
If a digital input is used for feedback, HIGH level means that gate is open.
Time portion in filling process during which control still runs in volumetric mode after
filling.
Hopper blow-out starts 2s before opening of feed gate and ends after set time after
gate closing.
If Parameter P 02.04 "Meas. Direction" is set to "UP", no hopper blow-out takes place.
Active only if Parameter P 05.08 "Gate Control" has been set to "PULSE" or
"PULSES".
Active only if Parameter P 05.08 "Gate Control" has been set to "PULSES" for pulse-
pause filling.
Gate delay time >0 causes the fill gate to remain open after filling until prefeeder is cut
off.
Contact is set upon start of filling, and reset with Gate CLOSED after filling.
Note:
Below this limit value, automatic fill control is inactive. Initial filling can be started only
using the "Start Filling" function. This helps to avoid uncontrolled material flow into the
bin in case of critical materials.

Determine whether default values or user specific parameter values are to be used for
scale monitoring.
Time during which the deviation may exceed the limit determined by "Deviation
Threshold" parameter.
See also "Deviation Factor" parameter.
If the deviation absolute value exceeds threshold P 06.11(12) for time P 06.10 , event
message HI 5 (P 06.13) is output.
At 100% setpoint, the effective threshold should be equal to Parameter P 06.11. For
smaller setpoints, threshold can be reduced using Parameter P 06.12.
P 06.12 = 0 : Effective threshold = P 06.11 * Setpoint/nominal value
P 06.12 = 1 : Effective threshold = P 06.11
2. Electronics error
Check external feed rate controller and motor cablings. Check feed controller
for proper setting (current limitation, speed range).
3. Calibration error
During initial calibration, controller was set so critically that smallest changes
of system properties cause unreliable operation.
Action: Repeat this commissioning step.

NO : No storage
YES : Store
YES-A : Store only if scale has not been stopped by alarm.
Alarm in stop state of scale does not influence stored value.
As a rule, speed controller is reset upon stop.
Controller may be activated only with speed controlled feed units and connected

YES:
Automatically adjusts controller in turn-on state of feeder. Internally stored for each
feed index, the acquired adaption factor is displayed as service value and maintained
also after power failure. Automatic acquisition stops if calibrating program is running or
scale is in volumetric mode. Calibrating programs "Volum. Discharge Adaption" and
"Set Nominal Feed Rate" set the adaption factor to neutral value 1.
The adaption factor can be displayed as service value and assume values between
0.33 and 3.0. Values outside this range are rejected.
Scale uses the acquired adaption factors, but automatic acquisition is stopped.
PASSIVE:
Scale uses the acquired adaption factors, but automatic acquisition is stopped.
NO:
Controller adaption is cut off. All adaption factors assume neutral start value 1.0.
The automatic adaption acquires the prefeeder's feed behaviour over the set period.
Measurement stops for an equally long time. If the adaption stops (conditons not met),
controller adaption restarts after a break of approx. the triple adaption time.
The linearization function lets you linearize the relation between controller control
magnitude and prefeeder.

Start/stop adaption.
Adaption is used to adjust the eliminator to the normal interference on scale which
must not be faded out.
The natural dynamics of the control upon of disturbances in material flow and software
changes must be ensured. Control and faults to be faded out are decoupled from one
another with the use of the "Fuzzy Reg." parameter.
Big values produce strong decoupling, but also weaker fade-out during the control
process.
Used to monitor the elimination intensity time integral. Strong eliminations are more
liable to fault message output than weak eliminations.
The monitoring function is designed to ensure system safety through cut-off or
extension of elimination thresholds.

Overview
The central control unit is designed as two-stage cascade controller for control of feed
rate and speed. It consists of two PI controllers of the types.
Controller Parameters
The scheme below shows the correlation between controller parameters and control
magnitude.
Changing KP Changing TN
Vh206414_gb.cdr
Stand-By
If setpoint falls below the limit value set by Parameter P 06.03 "Standby Limit Value",
output sets drive to OFF. Controller control magnitude is set to its lower value in
accordance with Parameter P 10.08 "Position at Stop".
Controllers do not operate; the feed rate controller integral component is cleared, or
remains stored, as a function of Parameter P 10.09 "Store".
Speed controller integral component is cleared.
Measurement remains active.
If setpoint exceeds the limit set by Parameter P 06.03 "Standby Limit Value", system
immediately returns to normal mode.
Deviation
Deviation is displayed and monitored in gravimetric mode only.
Display is filtered using P 07.08 "Deviation"; monitoring is not filtered at all.
If the time of control difference Xd set by Parameter P 06.10 "Time Deviation" exceeds
the value of Parameter P 06.11 "Threshold Val. Dev.", event message HI-05 "Event
Deviation" is output. If controller difference exceeds threshold during the set time,
monitoring restarts.
NOTE: The most important batch settings are effected in Parameter Block 16 "Batch
Mode".
Batching Sequence:
(Fig. Details: Batching)
Point 0 : Start batch using scale START command.
Point 3 : Feed rate setpoint approaches zero and "Dribble Feed" and
"Full Feed" signals change edges. Determine point using Parameter P
16.15 "Adaptation Time". The effective setpoint is reduced in form of a
ramp or in steps as a function of Parameter P16.03 "Adaptation
Mode".
Condition for cut-off function (a):
• You can start new batch only when afterflow time has
elapsed.
Adaption
After every complete batch, system computes a correction amount based on missing
amount and stores value in Parameter "Correction Amount". Steps 3 and 4
automatically shift during next batching operation .
K(new) = K(old) + adap * Error
K(new) = New correction amount
adap. = Adaption factor
Errors exceeding the batch tolerance set by P 16.20 are limited to the set tolerance
value.
Errors smaller than smallest display digit are not corrected.
Alarm
Aborts batch. After remedy of cause and acknowledgement of message, batching can
be resumed.
Power OFF
Batch aborts, batching mode remains selected. All counter readings and batch values
are stored. Next start command starts new batch
Stand-By Mode
During deceleration time, feeder can go to stand-by mode. Relevant message is
suppressed.
Limit Values
Event messages Pmin and nmin are suppressed during deceleration time. This does
not apply to digital outputs.
Feature
Explanations:
All signal levels can be inverted by parameter setting. The drawing shows the default
values.
• E = Event message
• DI = Digital input
• DO = Digital output
Note:
With signals DI E1 - DI E2 and DI M1 - DI M5, you can also select LS (Logical Signal)
for source. This enables digital outputs to be used as well.
Note:
The time gate output cycle always consists of delay time plus pulse time.
Input is not reevaluated before this cycle has elapsed.
Use:
(i) Short signals --> extend for fixed time
(ii) Long signals --> generate cycle (pulse/pause)
iii) Doubling a digital output
The delay time has to be set to 0 sec. and the pulse time has to be set to 0.3 sec.
Example:
Simple fill control using single contact (e.g. MAX).
If MAX contact is open, filling interrupts for a defined time. When this time has
elapsed, MAX contact is reevaluated, and cycle restarts.
Parameter "Active in OFF" lets you determine whether fill control operates in ON state
only or also in OFF state.
• via the "mere" pulse output (open collector) only at VEA1 (-X6: 4, 5)
frequency <10Hz for electronic totalizing counter,
• via a relay output at VSEs or VEA; the minimum pulse length being 1sec, or
• via output D07 available on VSE1 when a VEA 20101 is used. DO7 is an
open collector output which can be used both as a quick pulse output and
as a "binary output", the maximum output frequency being 10Hz when used
as a quick pulse output.
