Lesson Plan for Class-3, Term-1, Mathematics.

Lesson No : MATH-3-NR-7 Total Duration: 40 Minute
Lesson Name : Addition and subtraction
Sub Topics : 1.8.1.1 Addition and subtraction including the decimal number
1.8.1.1 Addition and subtraction including the decimal number
Lesson Objective : Add decimal numbers
Subtract decimal numbers
Teaching Learning Materials :
1. Cambridge Primary Mathematics Learners Book-5
2. , Exercise Copy, Whiteboard, Marker
3. Cambridge Primary Mathematics Work Book 5

1. Engagement (Previous Lesson) Duration: 5 Minute

Teacher ask questions to get to know, what they already know about the topic and for creating the interest and curiosity of the topic.

1) Explaining new Words relevant to the lesson

Adding decimals means finding the sum of two or more decimal numbers. To subtract decimal numbers, first make the number
of digits on the right of decimal point equal if not and then subtract them
2) Relevant experience
Since dollars and cents are typically written as decimals, you often need to work with decimals. Knowing how to add and
subtract decimal numbers is essential when you deposit money to (and withdraw money from) your bank account; perform an
incorrect calculation, and you may be costing yourself some cash!
3) Elicitation from the student
4) A Puzzling question relevant to the lesson

2. Exploration Duration: 5 Minute

Students explore the new concept through several methods and communicate with their peers and the teacher plays the role of a
facilitator.
Teacher Student
Begin by asking students to add 12.3 and 0.81. Students should already be familiar with
When all students have finished their calculations, have them share the place value of decimals with up to four decimal places,
their answers for class discussion. What steps were taken to reach the addition and subtraction of integers.
that figure? Does everyone agree on the answer?

3. Explanation (Teachers) Duration: 10 Minute

Students to come forward to describe their own understating within the group. Teacher checking for misunderstandings and give
formal definitions and explanations of concepts.
Explaining the topic to the students by review decimal basics by writing a decimal number to the tenths place on the board (e.g., 2.4).
Call on a student to read the number and tell you the value of the number in the tenths place (four-tenths). Tell students that the tenths place is
the first digit to the right of the decimal point and represents one out of ten equal parts of a whole.
Write a decimal number to the hundredths place on the board (e.g., 4.56).
Call on a student to read you the number and tell you the value of the number in the hundredths place (six hundredths). Tell students that the
hundredths place is to the right of the decimal point and represents one out of one hundred equal parts of a whole.
Tell students that today they will practice adding/subtracting decimals.

4. Elaboration Duration: 18 Minute

Students describe individual group work to the class, teacher can re-teach more details about the concepts in more details, copy
work and further explanation.
The teacher will elaborate the lesson from the CPLB.

5. Evaluation (Student) Duration: 2 Minute

Teacher evaluates students understanding using self-assessment, peer-assessment, writing assignments, exams, projects, book
report or a model.
