Preliminary results on springtails (Hexapoda:
Collembola) diversity in the city of Novi Sad,
Serbia

Collembola today represent a separate class of arthropods, and springtails have been
known to science for more than three centuries. However, knowledge of their diversity is far from
complete. In addition to the difference in location of the oral apparatus when compared to insects,
they lack Malpighian vessels, the eyes are in form of ocelli or are absent, and molting does not stop
in the adult phase. In contrast to wingless insects, winglessness is a primary trait for springtails.
They are ametabolic organisms with specific organs: furca (fork) and tenaculum (ventral tube),
which, in addition to other functions, play a role in springtails' characteristic jumping. To date,
more than 9,000 species classified into 4 orders have been described, with possible number of
species as high as 100,000 which have yet to be described. On the territory of the Republic of
Serbia, springtails have been studied by only a few researchers. In April 2022, the soil was sampled
from the Futoški Park (city park) and Šodroš locations (river beach), and a pitfall trap was placed
at the locality Higijenski Zavod (house yard). The mesofauna was extracted from the soil using
Tullgren's method. This research identified a total of 15 species of springtails. The largest number
of species were identified in the sample from the Futoški Park locality (13), followed by Šodroš (12),
and the least at the locality Higijenski Zavod (9), with the largest number of individuals being found
at Šodroš. Compared to the literature data from 1984, 11 new species were registered. Among these
19 species in total, Parisotoma notabilis (Schäffer, 1896), Lepidocyrtus curvicollis Bourlet, 1839
and Sminthurinus elegans (Fitch, 1862) are the most common, occuring in all localities studied.
As this is probably far from the real number of species in the area of Novi Sad, research into the
specific habitats of this area should continue.
