Pre-travel consultation is important to prepare travelers for the health concerns that might
arise during their trips. Effective pretravel consultations require attention to the health
background of the traveler and incorporate the itinerary, trip duration, travel purpose, and
activities. Travel health advice should be personalized, highlighting the likely exposures from
the specific destination and also reminding the traveler health condition. Travelers with
special health conditions require attention to their health issues as they relate to the
destination and activities.
The World Health Organization recommended all traveler to seek travel advice from a
clinician four to eight weeks before departing especially if the traveler is going to high-risk
countries like Angola. Angola is a Souther-African Country endemic to Malaria, Yellow
Fever, and has a history of Zika Virus outbreak in 2017. The clinician needs to make sure the
traveler is in good condition and also providing advice and information to make sure the
traveler is safe during their trip. For example, Yellow Fever vaccine is required when visiting
Angola, and Anti-Malaria prophylaxis is recommended therefore the clinician must provide
this to the traveler. Another important thing is to educate the client basic travel information,
eat and drink well-cooked food, prevent bug bites by using repellents, stay away from
animals, reduce exposure to germs by washing hands, and avoid sharing body fluids.
Information about how to get medical care while traveling is necessary for travelers with
special health conditions such as chronic illness, pregnant women, and the elderly. Inform
them that it is better to travel with a guide, and always maintain personal security
