Intended Use:

Clinical Significance and Test Interpretation:
Increased levels -
‡ Insulinoma
‡ Cushing syndrome
‡ Acromegaly
‡ Obesity
‡ PCOD (Poly-cystic ovarian disease)
Decreased level -
‡ Diabetes mellitus (Insulin dependent diabetes is in part caused by lack of endogenous insulin )
‡ Hypothyroidism
Reflex Tests:
‡ Glucose tolerance test
‡ C-peptide
‡ Insulin antibody
Limitations of the test:
‡ Most patients treated with insulin for diabetes develop insulin antibodies within a few months; hence antibodies can interfere with
result by competing with the insulin antibodies used in the assay.
‡ Food intake and obesity may cause increased insulin levels.
‡ Drugs like corticosteroids, Levodopa and oral contraceptives may cause increased insulin level.
