All deck officers must know how to use all the various different items of equipment to be able to make distress calls. However, instructions for distress calls should be posted beside each piece of equipment anyway. Operational instructions relevant to equipment can be found in relevant manufacturers’ operating manuals. A certified officer should be designated as primarily responsible for radio communications during distress incidents. Their familiarization with the communication equipment will be verified during the Internal Navigational Audits carried out by the Master and during the internal audits of the Company.
