3 Minute Step Test

Objective
The objective of this test is to monitor the development of the worker’s cardiovascular system.
Equipment
• A 12 inch high step
• A stopwatch
• Metronome
Conduction of test
• This test requires the worker to step up and down, one foot at a time, onto the step or bench
for 3 minutes and to maintain a steady pace of 96 bpm (one footfall=one beat).
• Metronome will be set to a 96 bpm
• The worker is counted in by the tester and once the proper pace is attained the tester will
being the 3 minute test
• The worker steps up and down, one foot at a time, onto the step at a rate of 96 bpm for 3
minutes
• The tester ensures the worker maintains the required pace
• After 3 minutes the test is stopped and the worker will sit on the step while the tester takes the
worker’s heart rate for 1 minute.
Index
• Very Poor-Excellent rating will be given to workers based on the chart below
• Numerical value rating will also be given to the worker’s level of cardiovascular fitness using
the equation HR/age=Cardiovascular fitness index.
