K’s first case A brief summary

Sir Michael Grey was murdered in his house.

Katrina Kirby (K) was the detective. It was her first case. She had three questions: Who, How
and Why?

That night, Sir Michael had dinner and then he went to work alone in the study. He was found
dead at about ten. He was on the floor, next to the fridge. There wasn’t a weapon and the
door and the window were locked from the inside. It wasn’t a suicide because there wasn’t
poison.

There were five other people in the house and they all had reasons to kill him.

1. His wife: Lady Elizabeth. She was jealous of the secretary.

2. His brother in law: Andrew Cavell. He knew Sir Michael was going to give money to his
secretary and he didn’t want him to spend Cavell’s industries money. In the past Sir
Michael wasn’t rich, just out of the Army. He married Lady Elizabeth because of her
money. He also hated him because he liked young secretaries.
3. His friend from the Army: Colonel Fawcett. Sir Michael had lent him some money and
he gambled it. Sir Michael wanted him to sell his house to give him back the money.
4. His secretary: Angela Everett. She was angry because Sir Michael was going to change
his will and he wasn’t going to leave her the money she wanted.
5. The housekeeper: Nancy Flack. She had worked for Lady Elizabeth for forty years. She
hated the secretary. She was afraid that Sir Michael left Lady Elizabeth.

K interviewed them. Then she said she knew her first question HOW? But not WHO yet.

She read the letter he wrote before dying. It said he wasn’t going to leave his secretary any
money and that he was tired of her. On the Dictaphone he said some words to say goodbye to
her. Afterthat, K told them to go to sleep.

That night, she waited in the study. Colonel Fawcett appeared. K attacked him but he said he
just wanted to see what killed him. He was an engineer like Sir Michael. He was amazed
because it was a crossbow that shot icicles. The icicle was like an arrow but the weapon was
water. It just disappeared, it was very clever. He said Sir Michael made that bow. He made
things like that in the Army. It was his hobby. Nancy Flack was listening behind the door. Then
K opened the door and She confessed. She said she took the bow and made the plan. She put
the mechanism behind the wall a week ago but she prepared it a month ago. Last night she put
the icicle in the refrigerator. She worked carefully, she didn’t leave any fingerprints. Why? She
wanted to kill Angela Everett. (she always poured whisky for Sir Michael)
