Leadership

At its simplest form, it is the aptitude to guide others to follow. Being able to influence

others already gives you a sense of leadership qualities. It is about guiding and impacting

outcomes, being able to work together to accomplish something you cannot do alone. Authority

does not immediately exude leadership, but the actions you do and not your position determines

so.

To be a good leader, one must be a good listener. This means that to be successful in

leading others, you need adequate communication skills. It is not as simple as ordering

subordinates on what or what not to do. It helps to be supportive, being able to perceive different

perspectives in order to operate a strong results orientation and solve problems effectively.

Fundamental tools of communication include establishing long term goals, listening and

understanding key stakeholders, creating opportunities for dialogue, and communicating

proactively.

In today's world, modern leaders have to lead more efficiently and differently. According

to PepsiCo CEO Indra Nooyi, it’s the fundamental role of the leader to look for ways to shape

the future decades ahead and not just react based on the status quo. In addition to that, he should

be able to help others adjust to the disruptions in the status quo. For others, the key quality in a

leader is being able to keep their company relevant. For Nasdaq CEO Adena Friedman it is being

to collaborate with others without sacrificing haste.

Personal Leadership Qualities

Sharing thoughts candidly, I don’t think I am fit to be a leader. I’ve always been more

comfortable with being a follower, though it’s mostly because I am a good listener. That’s one

quality a leader needs to have. I may not be inclined to taking initiatives at the beginning, but

when things are in a stalemate, I rise up to the challenge and try to inspire others to push through

our collective objective. A similar situation happened only two weeks ago when our group hasn’t

begun making our course project. With the deadline nearing, I had no choice but to lend my ideas

to our designated leader and communicate with the group about my intentions to finish our due.

Fortunately we made it in time just before the submission deadline.
