THE COMPLETE BOOK OF

ROSE CULTURE IN WEST BENGAL

“THE BENGAL ROSE CULTURE”
By
Mr. ATIN BASU
How to Pot a New Rose Plant after Buying from Nursery
I am giving all the Information’s that has been given by Our Beloved and honourable
and the great Rosarian Mr. Atin Basu who gave his total experience in our Facebook Group
Rose Lovers "The Bengal Rose Culture". He and his group explained everything about
Plantation of a Rose Seedling to its extreme flowering. I am just giving the Instructions
that has been Instructed by our Beloved Sir Mr. Atin Basu. What we should do after buying
a new Rose Seedling/Plant from the Nursery. There are two Medias in which you can Plant
a new Rose to get a healthy Plant with maximum Bloom. Sir. Atin Basu described about
two basic medias and to Plant a Rose the main and the Primary media is

Cinder (In India we know them by many names, In West Bengal we call them as Ghesh,
Khangar) but the basic thing we have to know about Cinder is it is a partly burnt coal that
has stopped giving off flames but still has combustible matter in it. You can find Cinder in
many places in India or you can even Order Online. I will give you some Links and Mobile
Number so that you can get Cinder easily.

The second Media is Soil, but you have to make the soil media by the combination of some
other elements the Proportions are:

. Well drained Soil - 5 Parts/5 Pot

. Vermicompost – 2 Parts/2 Pot
. Sand with Large Granules/Cinder – 3 Parts/3 Pot
. Bone Dust – 300 Gram
. Mustard Cake – 200 Gram
. Hornflex – 100 Gram
. Single Super Phosphate – 150 Gram
. Potassium Sulphate – 75 Gram.

Mix the above said materials thoroughly and let them decomposed for around 21 days, and
while decomposing save them from rain water and keep them in a shady place. After 21
days you can plant a new rose in a 6 Inch pot only for better result. The best suggestion is to
put a pot full of the mixed media that you have made and water it thoroughly before using,
to see that the media is releasing water properly from the end of the pot. If you find ok then
plant the rose in the above said composition or else you have to change the media once
again. So, before finalizing the media do some experiments with the above composition by
changing the quality of the Soil only. The basic thing is to see that their will be no water
holding by the soil.

After you are done with the soil, plant the Rose in a 6 Inch Pot and water it properly. Try to
buy some healthy rose plant from good nurseries and the best time to plant Roses is in
February and March. The weather at this months is best for new plants to grow and if you
want to plant new rose in other seasons be careful and plant them at your own risk, as there
is a maximum chances of Rose Plants to die. The steps must be followed properly before
planting a new Rose. The steps are given below:
1. After bringing the plant to house firstly cut the Polybag using a Scissor or Blade
very smoothly so that it won’t touch the roots.
2. Take a Bucket of water, and be careful that you must fill the bucket as much the root
can be dipped, take out the Plant along with the soil and dip it in the water.
Keep aside for 5 to 10 Minutes so that the soil in the roots will get melt.
3. In other side prepare the 6-7 Inch Pot. Firstly see how many holes are there in the
pot close them by some broken Clay pots chips so that the water will take some time
to pass through it. Then fill the half of the pot with the Media you have made. If it is
Cinder then fill the Half Pot with Cinder and if the media is Soil then fill the Pot half
with soil mix.
4. Please don’t do any experiments like you are planting one Rose in Cinder and One
rose in Soil Media. Firstly gather your experience in this field then then try in some
other times.
5. Now in the other end hold the branches or the main stem of the rose from the bucket
and slightly shake the plant so that the extra soil will fall off from the roots but don’t
do anything forcefully as it can tear the roots, and if you see that yet some soil is left
then take out the plant and put it under a running tap water so that the rest of the
soil will melt. After clearing all the soil from the roots you have to either apply
Miccorrhiza or any Fungicide like Bavistin/ Indofil M-45/Saaf.
6. We have to first understand why we will use Miccorrhiza or any Fungicide,
Miccorrhiza helps the root to grow fast and fungicide helps to wash out any type of
infection from the roots, because some nurseries keep their plants very carelessly.
7. The applications will be 1 Gram/litre. It depends on the type of Bucket you are
using, like if you are using small bucket then 1 Litre of the mixture is enough for the
roots to dip or you have to take the mixture solution according to your bucket size,
but be careful that only the roots will be dipped. Keep the plant in the bucket for
another 10 Minutes.
8. After 10 Minutes take out the plant and place it over the pot that is been half filled
by your chosen media. Place the plant at the centre of the Pot and fill the rest of the
pot with the media you have chosen. But be careful that the bud union must not be
covered with the media as new shoots grow from this area only.
9. After planting water the plants properly. This is how we have to plant the roses.

Now comes the Fertilization part. Here we have to understand the Fertilization for the
plants which plays the main role. For Cinder and Soil media the fertilizing process is
different. So don’t get confused or it will badly effect the Plant may be your plant can die.

For Cinder Media:

1. Mix Humic Acid 1 Ml/Litre of Water and provide 250 Ml per plant, not more than
that. This application will be monthly Twice. Suppose you are giving Humic acid this
week then on the next week give Seaweed extract, and on the third week give Humic
acid again. Continue this for 1 Month.
2. Mix NPK 12:61:00 Fertilizer 1Gm/ Litre of water and provide 250 Ml per plant only.
This will be applied every day up to 1 Month.
3. Mix Seaweed Extract 1 Ml/Litre of water and provide 250 Ml per Plant only. This
will be applied for 1 Month, alternatively with Humic acid as told in the Point 1
above.
4. After 1 Month we have to provide main feeding, for we have to prepare the main
food. Follow the Instructions below:
i) Ammonium Sulphate – 30 Gram
ii) Super Phosphate – 20 Gram
iii) NPK 13:00:45 – 20 Gram
iv) Magnesium Sulphate – 15 Gram
v) Calcium Sulphate – 8gm
vi) Zinc Sulphate – 3 Gram
vii) Agromin Max – 3 Gram

Mix the above Chemicals thoroughly and apply ½ Gram per Plant for new Plants. Try
to buy the Products Lab grade, but those who are unable to gather Lab grades can buy
them from amazon or from local Nurseries.

Make the above mixture and keep them in an airtight bottle for the ease of daily use.
Make sure that ½ a gram for those plants which are around 1 Month old. First water the
plants properly then take a small container and mix the above said Fertilizer with small
amount of water and then apply to the Plants. But be sure that after Root treatment for
30 days this mixture must be applied. This fertilizer can be applied starting from ½
Gram to Maximum of 3 Gram according to the size and age of the Plants.

Keep in mind that over doze of any of the above said fertilizers can make the Plant die.
So, please obey the instructions given in this book.
