What is light energy?

One type of energy that we can see
is light.

The Sun is the source of light for the Earth. Wherever

light is not present, everything is completely dark and we
cannot see. 2

How does light travel?

Photons all line up together and travel in patterns shaped like waves.
When photons
move through the
air or space in
these waves it is
called radiation.

We can’t see these patterns with our eyes

because the particles are too small, and
because they are moving too quickly. Light travels from the Sun to the Earth in
rays. This is an example of radiation.

Light waves have a top part (the crest) and a bottom part (the trough).

Scientists measure light waves by working out the distance between the tops of each wave. This is called the wavelength. 7

Light waves with long distances between the crests have a long wavelength.
Waves with
long wavelength short distances

have a short
wavelength.

What is the spectrum of light?

The spectrum of light is the name we give to light that humans can see.
Red has the longest
wavelength and violet
has the shortest.
Green has a medium
wavelength.

Most light that we see is white light, which

contains all of the different wavelengths.

LIGHT energy

It would take 100 000 light years to

travel the width of our own galaxy, the
Milky Way!

What is a light year?

Light energy travels at about
300 000 kilometres (km) per second.
This is the speed of light.

Light travels a distance of about 10 trillion kilometres in

one year. That distance is called one light year.
The light year is the ruler that astronomers use to
measure things in the universe. 13 14 15
