Great train vacations
Do you like traveling by train? Travel writer Daniel Fox tells us about three very special train vacations.
Venice Simplon-Orient-Express
On the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, you can live like a person from the 1920s! The Orient-Express
first started in 1883 and traveled between Paris and Istanbul. At that time, the last part of the trip, from
Varna to Istanbul, was by ferry. These days, the train usually goes to London, Paris, and Venice, but
sometimes it makes trips to other cities such as Vienna, Prague, and Budapest. There are no showers on
the train, but the assistants are really friendly and the restaurant has very good French food! The trip is
beautiful too. Before you arrive in Venice, you’re in the Italian mountains and you can see forests and
small towns outside. Spring and fall are good times to travel.
The Trans-Siberian Railway
The Trans-Siberian Railway goes from Moscow to Vladivostok in Russia – it’s a very big
country, and that’s 9,289 kilometers! On the way, you can stop in different towns and see
interesting museums and concerts. You can also swim in Lake Baikal – the water is very, very
cold! A lot of trains travel on the Trans-Siberian Railway. The Golden Eagle is a very
expensive train with nice rooms, good food, and a doctor. You can even learn Russian on the
train while you’re traveling. The Rossiya No 2 train takes about a week to travel between the
two cities, but you can meet some friendly people on the six-day trip.
Darjeeling Himalayan Railway
This old train travels from the Indian town of New Jalpaiguri to Darjeeling in the Himalayan region. You
can go from very hot weather in New Jalpaiguri to the mountains and clouds of the Himalayas! It’s a
good idea to have some warm clothes with you because it’s cold in the mountains. At the end of your train
trip, you can go hiking, or buy gifts in the local stores and markets. You can also drink Darjeeling tea
from the fields in the area – it’s really good!
