What we wear and why

Clothes have been a part of human life for thousands of years. We wear them for many reasons, such as
protecting our bodies from cold weather or the extremely hot sun. We also wear them to show others
that we have money and power. Clothes usually show which group or class we belong to. We can learn a
lot about human by their clothes. People in different countries design and decorate their clothes for
different purposes. Let’s look at two examples. In Mongolia people have been horse riders and they
need clothing that is suitable active outdoor lifestyle. Mongolians wear long-sleeved coat called deel.

The Masai also wear special clothing. Like the Mongolian have outdoor lifestyle and need clothes that
won’t worn out easily. That is why they wear the shunka. Shunkas are striped or checked. And red is an
important color in Masai. In facts colors have special meanings. The Masai women are popular by their
beautiful jewelry which shows someone’s age or social position. Each color has a special meaning. Blue
is for the sky and rain, white is for milk and for important food in Masai, yellow is for the sun.
