I is also com- ‘mon to provide redundant hydrauli Hud systems for pow- ‘ering actuators that control movable Might conieol surfaces such as ailerons, elevators, rudders, leading edge slats, Teuling edge Maps horizontal stabilizers, spoiler, airhrikes, andlor the like. It can be useful during fight ofthe aircraft to have extra and/or backup hydraulic power available, for ‘example during a hydraulic fd system failure, shutdown, andr other scenarios, Atleast some known hydraulic fad systems include hydravlie accumulators to provide stored ‘energy in the event that extra and/or backup hydraulic povver js desired, For example, the energy stored by « hydraulic ‘accumulator ean he used to move an atwator to, andor hold the actuator in, a displacement postion during a hydraulic ‘uid system failure, shutdown, or other emengeney station. But, hydraulic accumulators can add appreciable weight exit tothe hydraulic id system and thereby raft. The aided weight of a hydraulic aceumulator ‘ean be particularly costly to the eficieney of an sireralt ‘when considering that each redundant hydrate sl system ‘of the aireraft is provided witha dedicated hydraulic acca ‘mulator, thereby multiplying the weight penalty of a single hhydraulie accumulator by the number of redundant systems. [0002] A need exists fora providing extra andor backup hydraulic power that adds less weight and is thereby Tess costly 10 the efficiency ofan airera SUMMARY, 10003] | With those needs in mind, certin embodiments of the present disclosure provide a bootstrap hydraulic reser- voir fora hydraulic uid system. The hydraulic system canbe used to dive (ie power operation of one or mor aetators 102 ofan aera (Gg. an aircraft 700 shown in FIG. 7), such as, but not Tinie to, actuators ht contol ight conl surfaces lars, levator, rar, leading edge sats, trailing eae ops, horizontal stabilizes, spoilers, air rakes, et) ane ing goa, door, vers, thrstrevercrs, engine inet bypass doors, cogine variable gcometry iets, engine variable goometty noes andor he like Bach actor 102 may Be Fefered to heria as a "device sctstoe {0018} The hydraulic fd system 100 inclodes one or ore hydric pumps 104 and one or more ofthe aetators 102. Although only one hydraulic pump 104 and only one stator 102 is show for sini t should be understood that the hydraulic Hid system 100 can inchae any number ofl pups 104 and any umber of actuators 102 1a Some examples the hydraulic hid syst 100 includes & Xarieiy of dillere actuators 102 driven by a plurality of dicated hymaie amps 104, while in other examples the hydraulic Mid system 100 iociods one or mere hydewlic pumps 104 that each drives a platy ofthe aemators 102 {0019} The byte pup 104 inlades an ile 106 that elins a suction side OF the hydraulic pump 104 and an ‘outlet 108 that defines pressure side of the hdraule puss 104, The actstor 102 is fidly connect othe outlet 108 ‘of the hymn pump 104 via a presi fine 10 of the hydraulic fui system 100. During operation ofthe hyran lie pump 104, the actuator 102 receives pressurized hye lie Hid from the hyulie pump 104 through the pressure Tine 10 0020] The hydrautic Mid system 100 includes boots hydraulic reservoir 112. The bootstrap hydraulic reser 112 includes a bootstrap chamber 14, pistonchanber 16, May 28, 2020 piston 118, « hydraulic accumulator 120, and a valve 122. As shown in FIG. 1, the valve 122 is uidly connected to the pressure line 110, Operation of the valve 122 to provide backup hydraulic power from the hydraulic accumator 120 will be described below, The bootstrap chamber 14 holds 3 Volume orhydraulic Muid 124 0 therdy provide a reservoir ‘of hydraulic fluid for use by the hydraulic pump 104 during ‘opemtion of the hyelraulic Buid system 100, More partien- Jarl, the inlet 106 of the hydravlie pump 104 is tuidly connected to an outlet 126 ofthe bootstrap chamber 114 via a suetion line 128 ofthe hydraulic Hid system 100. During ‘operation of the hydraulic pump 104, the hydraulic pump 104 pulls hydrulie uid from the bootstrap chamber 114 ‘rough the suetion line 128, Am inlet 130 of the bootstrap chamber 114 is uidly connected toa return outlet 132 ofthe ‘actuator 102 via a return line 134 of the hydravlie Mid system 100 to return hydraulic Mid 1 the bootstrap cham- ber H14 from the actuator 102 during reimction of the actuator 102. Optionally, the bootstrap chamber 14 includes ‘dma 136 for draining hydrulie Hui Irom the bootstrap chamber 114, for example o a ground service panel andiar the like, [0021] As willbe described below, the bootstrap hydraulic reservoir I? provides postive suction pressure at the inlet 106 of the hydraulic pump 104. Accordingly, the piston 118 is operatively connected between the bootstrap chamber 114 and the piston chamber 116 o pressurize the hydraulic aid 124 contained within the hootstryp chamber 114, More particularly, the piston 118 extends a length from a bootstrap ed portion 138 and to a pressure end portion 149. The bootsrap end portion 138 is held within bootstrap chamber 114 and includes a bootstrap piston head 142 that extends within the bootstrap chamber 114. The pressure end portion 140 is held within the piston chamber 116 and incles 2 pressure piston head 144 that extends within the piston ‘haunber 116, The piston chamber 16 s Buily connected to the pressure line 110 ofthe hydraulic ud system 100 at an inlet 146 of the piston chamber 116, A will be described below, the piston chamber 116 is configured to receive pressurized hydraulic Mid from the pressure line 110, for ‘example during operation of the hycaulie pump 104, from the hydraulic aecumlator 120 when the presse Hine 110 is not pressurized (Le, is de-pressurized) by the hydraulic pump 104, andor the like [0022] During operation of the hydraulic Hud system 100, the hydraulic pump 104 pressurizes the pressure line 110, ‘hick pump a flow of hydraulic fad to dae actuator 102 t0 thereby extend the actuator 102. The pressurization of the pressure Hine 110 also pumps pressurized hydraulic Mid to fhe piston chamber 116. The pressurized hydraulic fluid received into the piston chamber 116 acts against the pres- ste piston head 144 and thereby moves the piston 118i the Girection of the amow 148. As the piston 118 moves in the siretion 148, the bootsrap piston head 142 sets against the vole of hydraulic fikd 124 contained with the bootstrap chamber 114 to thereby pressurize the volume of hydraulic IMuid 124. The pressurized hydraulic Muid 124 contained within the bootstrap chamber 114 provides the hydraslie pump 104 with positive suction pressure atthe inlet 106, [0023] When the hydraulic Aid systom 100 is shut down, the pressure line 110 is de-pressurized, which rosuls in a Joss of compression and thereby de-pressurizaton of the bydraulic fs 124 contained within the bootstrap chamber 114. The resulting loss ofthe postive suction presse at the US 2020/0166055 AI hydraulic pump 104 can cause the hydraulic pump 104 10 ‘cavitate when the hydraulic uid system 100 is restarted, Accordingly, the bootsiap hyraulie reservoir 112 includes the hydraulic accumulator 120. As is showa in FIG. 1, the hydraulic accumulator 120 is fudly connected to the pres- sure Hine 110. The hydraulic accumulator 120 includes un ‘energy storage source 150 having a potential enerny (@.. lass pressure,» spring force, a weight, ct.) that is less than, the pressure of the hydavlic fiid within the pressne line 110 when the pressure line 11 is pressurized (he. less than the operating pressure of the hydraulic Huid system 100) ‘The hydraulic aecumulator 120 is thereby configured 10 sccumlate pressurized hydraulic Maid from the pressure Tine 110 during operation of the hydraulic fluid systers 100. Insome examples, the potential energy ofthe enerpy storage source 150 of the hydrwulic accumulator 120- dampens pressure spikes inthe pressure line 10 during operation of the hydrate Nui system 100, 0024} In the embodiment of FIG. 1, the energy storage source 150 is a compressed gas such that the hydraulic sccumulator 120 is a compressed ene accumulator (some- nes referred to asa “gas-charged accumulator”). But the sydraulic secumulator 120 additionally or alternatively can slude any type of accumulator, sueh 2s, but not limited to, a mised weight accumulator, a spring type accumulator, & bellows type accumulator, a bladder type accumulator, & piston accumulator, andor the like. [0025] _Inoperation, when the hydraulic system 100i shut ‘down andl the pressure line 110 de-pressurizes, the potential ‘energy ofthe energy storage source 150 fores the hydraulic ‘uid accumulated by the hydraulic accumulator 120 ito the pressure line 110 such thatthe piston chamber 116 receives pressurized hydraulic fuid through the inlet 146 from the hydraulic aecumulstor 120, The pressurized hycraulic fluid received by the piston chamber 116 Irom the hydraulic sccumlator 120 maintains the pressure in the bootstrap ‘chamber 114 (i... maintains the pressurization of the vol- tume of hydraulic Muid 124 contained within the bootstrap ‘chamber 114) and thereby maintains the pressure within the hydraulic system 100, Accordingly the hydraulic pump 104 has positive suetion pressure atthe inlet 106 for use when the hydraulic uid system 100 js restarted. In other words, positive suction pressure is available o the hydraulic pump 104 the next ime the hydraulic Hid system 100 is started up, In the embodiment of FIG. 1, the valve 122 is a check valve that is biased to closed positon that prevents the pressurized hydraulic fd supplied to the pressure line 110 by the hydnalie accumblator 120 from owing within the pressure line 110 the direction ofthe arrow 182 toward the foulet 108 of the hydraulic pump 104 when the hydraulic ‘uid system 100 is nomoperational (i.e, has been shut down), 10026] The bootstrap hydraulic reservoir 112 optionally fnchides a presure relict valve 184 uidly connected between te bootstrap chamber 14 andthe pressure line 110 of the hydraulic Muid system 100. In some examples, the pressure relief valve 184 enables the bootstrap chamber 114 to be manually de-pressurized 10027) As bricily deseribod above, the valve 122 ean be ‘wed in combination with the hydrautie accumulator 120 10 provide backup hydraulic power to the hydraulic hud system 100. For example, the hydraulie power stored by the hydraulic accumulator 120 ean he used to supply one oF more actuators 102 of the hydraulic Hud system 100 with May 28, 2020 pressurized hydraulic uid upon a failure of the hydraul {uid system TOO, a shutdown of the hydraulic uid system 100, andor other emergency, et, ) situation. In ove example, the actuator 102 is supplied with pressurized hydraulic Nid from the hydraulic accumulator 120 to move the actuator 102 toa particule (efi, ete.) displacement upon failure andor shuidown of the hydraulie Muid system 100. In one ample, the sctustor 102 is supplied with pressurized hydraulic fad from the hydraulic accumulator 120 to okt the actuator 102 a a particular (e.g. ful, ete) displacement ‘upon failure andor shutdown of the hydraulic uid system 100. [0028] One example of a situation wherein hydraulic power stored by the hydraulie accumulator 120 ean be used ‘0 supply one or more actuators 102 of the hydraulic Noid system 100 with pressurized hydraulic fluid i an engine failure. More particularly, the loss of an engine ean result in loss of at least some hydraulie power available from the hydraulic fi system 100, The hydraulic accommlator 120 thus canbe used fo compensate forthe lost hydraulic power from the engine failure, In one specific example, a studden engine failure can require use of the rudder andor one or ‘more other fight control surfaces to compensate for the resulting asymmetric thrust. The hydraulic accumulator 120 canbe used in sich an engine failure to actuate the actuator (6) 102 associated withthe rudder andlor other fight contol surfaces) to counter the asymmetric thrust resulting from the engine failure. The hydraulic accumulator 120 can be a particularly important backup hyraslic power source in the event of an engine failure during take-off or landing, ‘whereit the aircraft has less space and time to maneuver. [0029] Another example ofa situation wherein hydraulic power stored by the hydraulic accumulator 120 ean be vised ‘o supply one or more actuators 102 of the hydraulic Noid system 100 with pressurized hydraulic Dud is to help open Janding gear doors of the sioraft in the event that the hydraulic fd system 100 is unavailable. For example, the Janding gear doors on some aircraft ean remain closed even when tnlocked becanse ofthe extemal air pressure acting thereon [0030] As shown in FIG. 1, the valve 422 is fuialy connected to the pressure line 110 between the hydra accumulator 120 aod the outlet 108 ofthe hyaulic pump 104. The valve 122 is moveable between an open position and a closed position. As deserbed above, the example of the valve 122 is @ check valve that is biased by a spring andr her biasing mechanism to the closed positon. Inthe closed position, dhe valve 122 prevents hydraulic Dui from ‘lowing within the pressure line 110 through the valve 122 in the direction 152. During operation ofthe hydraulic fd system 100 (ie. when the pressure line 110 is pressurized), the valve 122 is configured to be moved to the open position against the bias by pressurized hydraulic Mid flowing through the pressure line 10 in the direction of the arow 156 toward the piston chamber 116. In the open position, the pressurized hydraulic Muid fing within the pressure Tine 10 in the ditection 156 during operation of the hyralic ‘uid system 100 flows through the valve 122 tothe piston chamber 116 o thereby pressurize the volume of hydaul ‘uid 124 contained within the bootstrap chamber 114 [031] The valve 122 includes an sctustor 188 that is configured to selectively move the valve 122 t0 the open position (against the bias of the valve 122 to the closed position) when the pressure line 110 is de-pressurized, for US 2020/0166055 AI ‘example when the pressure line 110 is de-pressurized by 3 failure ofthe hydraulic fluid system 100, a shutdown of the hydraulic uid system 100, andor other (ex. emerzeney, ©.) situation, BY opening the valve 122 when the pressure Tine 110 js de-pressurized, the potential energy of the enerzy sorage source 180 forces the hydraulic Hid accumulated by the hydraulic accumulator 120 into the pressure line 110 sch thatthe hydric accumulator 120 supplies the pres- sure Fine 110 with pressurized hydraulic id that flows in the direction 152 toward the outlet 108 of the hydraulic pump 104. The pressurized fluid flowing from the hydraulic ‘accumulator 120 through the pressure line 110 inthe direc tion 182 flows to the actuator 102. Accordingly, when the pressure line 110 is de-pressurized and the actuator 158 moves the valve 122 to the open position, the hydraulic ‘accumulator 120 supplies the actuator 102 with a flow of pressurized hydranlie fluid through the pressure fine 110. The actuator 188 may be referred to herein as a “valve sctustor™ 10032] In one embodiment, the actuator 158 is a solenoid. But, the actustor 158 additionally or altematively can include any other type of actuator, such as, but no Fimited to, an electric motor a linear actuator (ea ball serew, & Jead serew, a rolary serew, another serew-type actuator, & hydraulic linear aetustor, @ pheumatic Tinear actuator, & servo, another type of linear actuator, et), a hydraulic actuator (eg, a hydrmulic pump system, ete), a pneumatic sctuato, a Servo, andr the like. 10033] "In operation, the aetator 188 ean be activated t0 selectively open tho valve 122 on demand (eg. using. 2 ‘contol system of the aireraft, ete.) when backup hydraulic ower 10 one oF more actuators 102 is desired. Once the backup hydraulie power provided by the hydraulic aecumu- Jator 120 is no longer needed, the actuator 158 can be ‘setivated to allow the valve 122 to retum to the closed Position under the bias of the spring andlor other biasing ‘chasis of the valve 122, For example, the actuator 158 ‘can be activated to allow the valve 122 to rtm to the closed Position upon the arrival of the sirraft at a gate, hanger, andlor other parking location prior to shutdown af the sirera’s systems (eg. the hydraulic fluid system 100, ‘contol systems, ete), which may enable any remaining uid pressure within the pressure Tine 110 and/or the hydraulic fccumlator 120 to maintain pressure within the bootstrap ‘chamber 114 10034) In some examples, the actuator 158 enables the bootstrap chamber 114 to be remotely de-presturized, for ‘eximple for performing maintenance on the wircral. For ‘example, an interface can be included on the airraft main- tenance page for remove reservoir depressurization by con- ‘manding the actuator 158 to move the valve 122 tothe open positon to allow the energy stored in the hydraulic accu Iator 120 to dissipate into the hydraulic Hid system 100. 10035] The configuration (eg, the size, type, ete.) of the hydraulic accumulator 120 can be selected to provide the hydraulic accumulator 120 with « predetermined energy storage capability. For example, the configuration of the hydraulic accumulator 120 can be selected to provide @ predetermined amount of backup hydnmalie power for the hydraulic fluid system 100, andor the like. In some ‘examples, the configuration of the hydraulic accurmlator 120 is selected to provide the hydraulic accumulator 120 swith a reser enefgy storage capability than an existing hydraulic accumulator ofthe bootstrap hydraulic reservoir May 28, 2020 112 that hasbeen sed solely to maintain pressure within the bootstrap chamber 114, for example to provide «greater bockup hydraulic power capability than Would be possible with the existing hydrauli necumlator {0036} ‘The actor 188 enables the hydraulic accor tor 120 serve a dul purpose of mantsining presue Within the bootstap chamber 1M and providing backup hydraulic power tothe hydraulic hid system 100, The dl ‘te ofthe hydraulic aecomlator 120 cables the supply of backup hydrulic power tothe hyde tid system 100 ‘without the addon of dedicated hydraulic accumulator to the hvdeaulie Hid system, For exaziple the dal tse ofthe hydraulic accumulator 120 can enable the elimination of a dedicated iydraulic accumulator for coreting for asym ‘mete thst daring an engine failure, dedicated hydraulic ‘accumulator for opening the landing pear doors, andor the Tike. Accordingly the dal ase ofthe hydraulic accumslator 120 reduces the Weight and complexity ofthe hydra id system 100 and thersby incrses the clcicney of the sireral {0037] The valve 122 isnot fmited to the rangement, configuration, components, andor the ike shown in 1G. 1 Rather, the valve 122 ackitonally of allematvely aa Include anyother arrangement configuration, components, andor the lke that enable the valve 122 to provide backup air extra hydraulic power to the hydra id system 100, secondary actuator (ex. the secondary actuator 460 shown in IG, 4, te secondary actuator 860 showin FIG, the sccondary actuator 660 shown in FIG. 6, et) of d area, andor the Fike (0038) For example, and reering now 10 FIG. 2, @ yale Mud system 200 incdes one oF more hydric pumps 204 and one or more setstrs 202. The hydraulic Pomp 204 includes an nlct 206 that defines aston side of the lvdube pump 204 and an outlet 208 that defines @ prcsre side of the hydric pump 204, The sctstor 202 Js idly connected the out 208 ofthe hydraulic pump 204 via pressure ne 210 ofthe hydraulic Hui system 200 ‘The hydeaule Mid system 200 aso includes a bootstrap ye eservoir 212, which inclods a bootstrap chamber 214, 0 piston chamber 216, 2 piston 218, «hydraulic accumulator 220, snd a valve 222 10039] The valve 222i Muy connected to te pressure Tine 210 betwoun the hydraulic accumulator 220 and the outlet 208 of the hyeralic pump 204, The valve 222 fncludes a check valve 222 thats moveable between an ‘pen poston and a closed positon.
