QUESTION 1 [15 MARKS]

In a chemical engineering process, water vapor (H2O) is heated to sufficiently high

temperatures that a significant portion of the water dissociates, or splits apart, to form oxygen
(O2) and hydrogen (H2):
1
H2O ↔ H2 + O Equation (1)
2 2
If it is assumed that this is the only reaction involved, the mole fraction x of H2O that
dissociates can be represented by

K=
x

2 pt
1−x 2+ x
where K = the reaction equilibrium constant and pt = the total pressure of the mixture. If pt = 5
atm and K = 0.04, determine the value of x that satisfies Equation (1). Use Secant method of
3 iterations with initial conditions x−1=0 and x 0=0.01

Answer:
xr= 0.01765, |ea| =0%

QUESTION 2 [15 MARKS]

Top Light Sdn. Bhd. is a leading light fitting manufacturer in Malaysia. The company
produces three types of light fittings for general lighting use namely diffused fitting, louvre
fitting and direct fitting. For all these light fittings, plastic, metal and glass are the three basic
materials used in fabricating these light fittings. Table 1 summarizes the material
requirements for each type of light fittings.
Table 1: Material Requirements for Light Fittings

Plastic (m2/unit) Metal (m2/unit) Glass (m2/unit)

Diffused Fitting (unit) 3.0 0.5 1.2
Louvre Fitting (unit) 2.2 1.0 0.8
Direct Fitting (unit) 1.2 2.5 0.5

The total amount of material supplies weekly are 870 m 2 of plastic, 700 m2 of metal and 340
m2 of glass. However, due to the recent pandemic, the demand for light fittings has been
reduced by 50%. Therefore, the company has decided to reduce the weekly material supplies
by 50% starting on the first week of November 2020. Use LU Decomposition method to find
the number for each type of light fittings in Table 1 that can be produced weekly starting
from November 2020.

QUESTION 3 [20 MARKS]

Sugu has an online shop where she sells handmade paintings and cards. She sells the painting
for RM50 and the card for RM20. It takes her 2 hours to complete one painting and 45
minutes to make a single card. She also has a day job and makes paintings and cards in her
free time. She cannot spend more than 15 hours a week to make paintings and cards.
Additionally, she should make not more than 10 paintings and cards per week. She makes a
profit of RM25 on painting and RM15 on each card. Use Simplex method to determine how
many paintings and cards she should make each week to maximize her profit.
