As Told By Mrs. Homer Martin BERGA RAED ED TAD FULD TNED OUED EDF The Carnals As Told By Mrs. Homer Martin The Carnals a This is the story of a family ~ a family started by one lone immigrant and spread from coast to coast. [hope this history will bea source of pride toall those whose family trees carry the name of CARNAL. Florian Amede Carnal was born in the town of Basel, Switzerland. Basel iy high in the Jura Mountains on the border where Germany, France and ‘Switzerland meet. Florian’s native language was French, but he wasalso skilled in English and German. Where he learned English is not known, but I assume that it was in the Catholic school in the Cathedral in Basel. The town supported both a cathedral and a church. We know nothing of Florian’s family or why he decided to seek hisfortune in America. Wedo know that Carnal isnot an unust name in Switzerland and there may have been relatives who followed him tothe States as there are Carnal’s on the West Coast near Santa Barbara who are not descended from Florian. Florian was born on March 20, 1807 and wasa blacksmith by trade. When he ‘came to America about 1832, he was employed by the rich and prominent ‘Ogden family as their coachman at their estate in Waddington, New York: ‘Waddington is a small village on the St. Lawrence River directly across from ‘Morrisburg, Ontario, Canada. The Ogdens cameto the north country from New ‘Jersey and thats no doubt wheresome of the family may have met Florian when he first ame to America, Relative to the Ogdens, the small city of Ogdensburg, New York on the U.S. Canadian border, was named for the Ogdens. Chapter 2 On April 5, 1836, Florian married Martha Matilda Fitzgerald, Martha was born in Ireland on October 3, 1810, the daughter of William Fitzgerald, a tailor by rade, Their children began to arrive January 11, 1837 when Alfred wasborn, He was followed by William on October 12, 1838. William died on January 18, 1841, James was born June 27, 1840, then another William on June 26, 1842 and finally Florian Amede, Jr.on August 12, 1843. Martha wasa very small gil and before Florian, Jr. was born, she became very ill. Due to her fraility and the care that was necessary for thelittle boys then 6, 3,and2, help wasneeded. Mary Abbey, a 35-year-old spinster born in England came to help. She was a sister of Mrs. Thomas Simpson, a neighbor of the Carnals. Three days after Florian's birth, on August 15, 1843, Martha died. Mary Abbey assumed theresponsibility ofthe family. But, unlike today, it was not proper for an unmarried woman to live in this type of situation, On November 2, 1843, Florian and Mary were married and on September 9, 1844, the only Carnal daughter, Zilla Mary, was born. Mary Abbey was the only mother that the Carnal boys ever knew. She was ‘good woman but a very strict Episcopalian and eventually Florian and all of his sons except Florian, Jt left their Catholic faith and became associated with St Pauls Episcopal Church in Waddington. Two of the boys, James and William, were enttoaconventin Montreal to earn French. their father's native language, Florian eventually builta finehomeon the River Road, now State Route 37, for his wife and family, He was a rugged individual and family history has it that he was neversickaday in hislie until that fateful day thathe ell downthecellarand diedasa result on June9, 1988at8 1 years ofage. Mary was from Waddington but worked in Ogdensburg, Neighbors on the Van Rensselaer Road told us that when Len was courting Mary, he would drive his horse and cutter toward Ogdensburg in the late afternoon. The horse’s harness was equipped with sleigh bells and the comments were, of course, there goes Len to see Mary! No one, however, heard the bells on his return home in the wee small hours. Eventually, Len and Mary ‘were married and had one son, Cecil. Alfred and Almeda’s daughter, Zilla, married a George Wilson of Massena, George operated a grocery and meat business on Beach Street until he went (0 work on the Aluminum Company of America dredge used for widening the canal in Massena.
