Pre-Mid Assignment 2
Some people believe that professionals, such as doctors and engineers, should be required
to work in the country where they did their training. Others believe they should be free to
work in another country if they wish. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

There have been numerous competing views on whether highly qualified professionals, such as
doctors and engineers, should work in the country where they were trained, or they should be
free to work in any country they want. In my opinion, they should be free to work wherever they
want to achieve maximum career satisfaction.

On the one hand, a certain group of people believes that professional work sectors are
responsibility for national services because their country will face substantial brain drain if they
migrate to other countries to work. They are expected to provide benefits to their country in
exchange for the funds they receive from their country’s government. It means that the local tax
payers indirectly fund their study. As a result, they should contribute to the growth of their
country by using their expertise for its further development.

On the other hand, opponents argue that high-skill professionals, like everyone else, have their
goals and ambitions, they would also like to work in a country that provides them with better
career possibilities and a healthy work-life balance. Moreover, they also have a fundamental
right to choose wherever they want to work according to democratic law. For example, the
typical monthly wage for doctors in Thailand is between 50,000 and 100,000 baht, while the
same monthly wage for doctors in the United States is between 300,000 and 500,000 baht.

In conclusion, people have the right to live and work anywhere they desire. If greater
possibilities exist elsewhere, in my opinion, they should be free to take them. Another reason not
to discourage migration is the fact that migrants contribute significantly to the economy of their
home country by sending large sums of money back home.
