Use of the PRT Designator in Section VIII, Division 1 (2021 Edition)

In some recent correspondence it was brought to our attention that some confusion exists regarding the marking requirements for a “PART”
under Section VIII, Division 1 (2021). This bulletin is being issued in an attempt to clarify the intent of paragraph UG-116(h), which describes
two methods for stamping a PART:

For “U” Certificate Holders

For “PRT” Certificate Holders

The word “either” in UG-116(h)(1)(-a) is NOT intended to imply that either option is acceptable. This simply communicates that the
appropriate designator reflected by the scope of the Certificate of Authorization is to be used. The PRT designator is only applicable when

the part is constructed under a “PRT” Certificate of Authorization. Parts constructed under a “U” Certificate of Authorization are to use the
“U” designator with the word “PART” below it, and are NOT authorized to apply the PRT designator. However, Section VIII, Division 1 does
not state this. This is found in paragraph 5.1.2 of CA-1 (2020) which contains conformity assessment rules.

You will note that the specified designator for a Section VIII, Division 1 PRT certificate is actually “PRT VIII-1” as shown in Table 1.1-1 of CA-
1 (2020).
