LOW SMOKE AND FUME (LSF) WIRING CABLE
LSF cables combination of properties, which make it unique by reducing the threat to life and property.
LSF wiring cables produce lower levels of smoke and corrosive gases under fire conditions.

Resist Ignition
Thus increasing the time before cables actually start burning.

Reduce Propagation
Being slow to burn, it reduces the immediate threat to the life and allows more time for evacuation.

Do not contain halogen

Therefore hydrochloric acid is not formed during fire. There is no threat of inhalation of this highly toxic
chemical and cause no damage to the sensitive and costly equipments.

Produce less smoke and noxious fumes

Therefore do not inhibit vision, reduce disorientation and panic. With less smoke, visibility is not impaired
and occupants locate the exit route and can evacuate safely with better visibility and fire-fighting
personnel can extinguish fire quickly.

The cables are suitable for operation at a sustained conductor temperature of 90°C maximum. These
cables are suitable for using in areas of fire hazards or in areas like schools, hospitals, high rise building,
public places, etc., where safety of human life against toxic gas is of prime importance. The LSF
compound exhibits similar electrical and mechanical processing properties of PVC compounds but have
been specifically developed to meet the requirements of International fire tests for cable design and
material performance together with environmental benefits.

Cables of wide range of bright colours can be formulated with LSF compound.

NOTES ON TYPICAL PROPERTIES OF LSF COMPOUND
Oxygen Index (ASTM-D-2863)
The criteria for burning in the presence of percentage for oxygen in air. By mixing oxygen and nitrogen at
various percentages, this test finds at what percentage of oxygen the standard specimen starts burning.
Higher the oxygen index higher the resistance to get ignited. Minimum oxygen index shall be 30%.

Temperature Index (ASTM-D-2863)

Temperature index is the temperature at which the oxygen index of the material becomes 21. This test is
carried out usually by extrapolation method after the oxygen index is measured at the room temperature.

Smoke Density (ASTM-D-2843)

This parameter relates to measuring and observing relative amounts of smoke produced by the burning
or decomposition of materials. This test is carried out in accordance with ASTM D-2843. The
measurements are made in terms of loss of light transmission through a collected volume of smoke
produced under control-standardized conditions.

Acid Gas Emission (IEC-754-1)

During burning of cable materials, acid gases are evolved, especially hydrogen chloride. The gas
emission is evaluated in accordance with test method IEC 754-1, where approximately 1gm. for the
material is pyrolysed at 800°C in a combustion tube and resultant gases analyzed.

Oxygen Index Test as per ASTM-D-2863 Smoke density chamber as per ASTM-D-2843

Rating Factors / Protection

Rating Factors

The tabled ratings must be reduced for ambient air temperatures higher than 300C, appropriate
temperature ratings factors are as follows:-

RATING FACTORS

For ambient temperature other than 50oC, tabulated ratings shall be adjusted by factors as follows:

Ambient
25 30 35 40 45 50 55
Temperature (oC )

Thermo setting

insulated (90 oC)

Protection

Coarse excess-current protection is defined as that which will not operate within four hours at 1.5 times
the load current of the circuit, which it protects. Current ratings given for course excess-current protection
may be increased by 1.33 when close excess-current protection may be assured.

Close excess-current protection operates within four hours at 1.5 times the load current which it protects.

Current ratings given for close excess-current protection must be decreased by a factor of 0.75 when
coarse excess current protection is used.

Grouping / Installation
Grouping
CONDUIT AND SINGLE CORE CABLES
For groups of circuits unenclosed, the single circuit rating apply provided that;
1. The horizontal clearance between circuits is;
a. Not less than six times the overall diameter of an individual cable and
b. Not less than the overall width of an individual circuit - except that the horizontal clearance
need not in any case exceed 150 mm.
2. The vertical clearance between circuits is not less than 150 mm.
3. If the number of circuits exceeds four, they are installed in a horizontal plane.

In all other cases, unless a more precise evaluation of current rating has been made based on
experimental work or calculated data, the following factors are applicable.

Correction factors for groups of more than one circuit of single-core cables, or more than one multicore cable.

adjacent cables exceeds 2 De, no correction factor need be applied.

Installation
At temperatures of about -10oC, LSF cables begin to stiffen and should not be bent sharply or struck at
these lower temperatures. Prior to installation, cables should be stored for at least 24 hours in a warm
place. Low temperatures have no harmful effect; cables regain their normal flexibility at higher
temperatures.

Cables should be installed in accordance with the appropriate installation authority regulations.

Bending radius (minimum internal radius of bend)

For cables up to 10 mm diameter or minor dimension, three times the diameter or minor dimension.
For cables 10 to 25 mm diameter or minor dimension, four times the diameter or minor dimension
For cables exceeding 25 mm diameter or minor dimension, fix times the diameter or minor dimension

Oman Cables Quality Assurance

In order to ensure Quality Assurance, it is extremely essential to test and inspect the product at raw
material stage, at each stage of manufacturing and finished product stage.

OMAN CABLES have the following Quality Assurance System.

A. Raw-materials inspection
B. In-process inspection
C. Finished product inspection

Raw-Materials inspection
All the raw materials are procured only from internationally approved companies known for their quality
products based on OCI’s raw material specifications. On receipt at OCI, the materials are tested and
inspected by Oman Cables quality team. All materials are accompanied by manufacturer’s test
certificate. Only those materials, which meet Oman Cables raw material specification, are released for
production.

In-Process Inspection
Teams of well-experienced and qualified personnel, dedicated to quality, inspects and test all the in-
process materials at every stage and on 100% compliance are released for next process.

Finished Product Inspection

Oman Cables products undergo routine and type tests according to the relevant standards before
transfer to warehouse.

Routine tests are carried out for conformity to specifications. These are intended to confirm to design and
quality parameter. Various type tests are conducted lot-wise at regular frequency on sampling basis to
determine the dimensional, physical, environmental and electrical acceptance.
