GRADE LEVEL: Eleventh
ROOM NUMBER: 10

I. COURSE DESCRIPTION, PREREQUISITES, & GOALS

Connecting with Literature – American Traditions: Mirrors & Windows (Grade 10) is a prerequisite for this
course. The purpose of this course is for the student to provide students with the context, skills, and
understanding they'll need to function in today’s globalized, interconnected world. Engage students with rich,
diverse literary and informational texts that create mirrors for students to see themselves and windows for
students to extend understanding. Provide 21st century experiences that will help students build relationships
and prepare them for experiences far beyond your classroom walls.

Students will have opportunities to develop competence in Media Literacy, Critical Literacy and Collaborative
Learning as they make connections with a variety of selections that focus on the origins and evolution of
American literature; from Pre-Columbian Oral traditions, through Colonial Foundational writings, through the
Transcendentalist, Romantic, Realist/Naturalistic & Modernistic movements, through the Harlem & Southern
Renaissances, through the Beat Movement to our Contemporary Era.

Attendance Policy
Attending school regularly is necessary for comprehension of instruction and information. Classroom
participation improves retention of facilitated information. Failure to attend class denies the student the
opportunity to fully engage in the learning process. Froebel Bilingual School requires all students to attend
school unless they have a lawful reason to be absent. Students who during the semester have more than five
days of unexcused absences from school will be referred to the school administration.

Tardy Policy
During Remote Learning Students are expected to login to College One Classroom and follow check in
procedures daily during their class time. Teachers will allow students some buffer time each day for
connectivity issues. Please contact your teacher, if you are having persistent issues.

During face-to-face learning students are expected to arrive to class on time and if they do not, they have to
visit the office and bring the check in slip to their teacher.

Late Work
Assignments that are submitted late will be graded and entered after on-time work has been graded and
entered. Students must complete missing work by the end of each unit. Teachers will also notify parents and
students on missing work. Students will have one week to complete the missing work. Late work will not receive
the same credit as work turned in on time.

Homework Policy:
All homework will be assigned in order to provide practice opportunities for skill attainment and mastery.
Students are expected to spend time after school reviewing course material and doing independent reading.
All assignments must be neatly done and reflect time and effort. Occasionally, homework may be assigned
that falls under another grading category such as take-home tests, quizzes, and/or projects. When this is the
case, students will be informed prior to submission of the assignment.

*Note: Homework assignments are assigned at the teacher’s discretion and the usage of these may change
without prior notification. Note that all assignments are for the benefit of the student and may not necessarily
require grading but may be necessary for the completion and/or comprehension of future graded tasks.

Academic Honesty and Plagiarism

Plagiarizing from the Internet, or any other source, violates academic honesty. In addition, if a student
submits the work of any other person, this too is a violation of school policy. If a student is caught plagiarizing
or submitting another’s work, disciplinary action will be taken. Further, credit for completion may not be given.

Classroom Expectations

student’s scheduled class time, students should login to College One/Zoom and follow the posted instructions.

**Students are expected to use their computers regularly to access assignments or Zoom, College One, etc.

Participation and Behavior

Students are expected to participate in class discussions and contribute positively to the class. If students
disrupt the classroom environment and/or fail to adhere to classroom expectations outlined above, students
will be redirected as follows: the first incident, students will be given a verbal warning, the second infraction
will result in parent contact, and all further infractions will continue to elevate consequences.

In order to better assist students and guardians with student performance data, grade reports will be
issued quarterly throughout the semester. Progress can be monitored more often with the use of the Parent
Portal in College One.

This syllabus is subject to change without previous notice.
