SPRING

During our group time, we learnt about the garden

“The life cycle of a plant”. The children enjoyed
learning about the cycle by learning parts of the
plant. Some of the parts that we learnt were “the
seed, germination, sprouting and plant”. We also
learnt a big word called Photosynthesis which
means giving food to the plant such as sun, water
and oxygen.

We watched a short film about the lifecycle of the

plant and enjoyed learning about the body parts of the
plant.
The children enjoyed planting their own sprouts using a
zip lock bag, seedlings, cotton balls and water. It was
nice to see the children working together to create
their own sprouting bags individually. Children develop
a sense of connectedness to groups and communities
and an understanding of their reciprocal rights and
responsibilities as active and informed citizens (Kearns,
2017). This is evident, for example, when children:
begin to recognise that they have a right to belong to
many communities. We can’t wait to investigate further
by observing our sprouts in the bag.

Early Years of Framework - Outcome 2: Children are connected with and contribute to
their world - Children become socially responsible and show respect for the environment
Outcome 4: Children are confident and involved learners - Children resource their own
learning through connecting with people, place, technologies and natural and processed
materials (Australian Government Department of Education and Training, 2009).
