Lab 3: Configuring and Securing a Wireless Router – (Hands-on)

Objective:
The purpose of this activity is to gain hands-on experience configuring and securing a wireless router.

Activities:
Complete the tasks below by following the instructions provided by the lab instructor and referring to
the Linksys EA-Series User Guide “attached”.

Part A: Reset Wireless Router

1. Reset wireless router to factory default settings

Part B: Connect Wireless Router to Computer Network

Refer to the figure below to perform the following:
1. Connect wireless router to the Internet
2. Connect your workstation to wireless router

Part C: Configure Wireless Router
Refer to the table below; configure Linksys EA2700 or EA3500 wireless router with the settings below.
Some settings may already be configured by default.

Default IP Address 192.168.1.1
Default Password Admin
Web browser Use Firefox, to login to wireless router.

1. Host name set to your FirstInitialLastName (e.g., PSingh for Partap Singh)
Hint: Click Connectivity, Local Network tab, and then Edit
New Host name for wireless router: Enter here
2. Default wireless router password changed to a strong one
New password for wireless router: admin123
3. For 2.4 GHz wireless network:
o Network enabled
o SSID name set to FirstInitialLastName24 (e.g., PSingh24 for Partap Singh)
New SSID name for 2.4 GHz wireless network: cisco123
o Network mode set to Mixed
o Strong password configured for 2.4 GHz wireless network
New password for 2.4 GHz wireless network: cisco123
o Security mode (wireless encryption standard) set to WPA2 Personal
o SSID broadcast enabled.

4. For 5 GHz wireless network:

o Network enabled
o SSID name set to FirstInitialLastName5 (e.g., PSingh5 for Partap Singh)
New SSID password for 5 GHz wireless network: cisco123
o Network mode set to Mixed
o Strong password configured for 5 GHz wireless network (different from 2.4 GHz network)
New password for 5 GHz wireless network: cisco123
o Security mode (wireless encryption standard) set to WPA2 Personal
o SSID broadcast disabled
5. Guest network disabled (turned OFF)
6. Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) disabled (turned OFF)
7. DHCP server configured to give out only 20 IP addresses
8. NAT (Network Address Translation) enabled
9. Firewall for IPv4 SPI and IPv6 SPI enabled

Part D: Demonstrate to Lab Instructor that Smartphone can Connect to Wireless Router
Refer to the figure below to perform the following:

1. Connect smartphone to your wireless router’s 2.4 GHz SSID OR 5 GHz SSID
2. Open Wi-Fi settings on smartphone to view its IP address (assigned by router’s DHCP server)
3. Ask Lab instructor to verify that smartphone is connected to your wireless router
4. Use smartphone to connect to Web site: www.cbc.ca

Discussion:
Suggest 2 ways to secure the wireless router.

We can securely Turn off network name broadcasting and Keep your router's software up to date.

Conclusion:
in this lab, we learned about how to connect networks through routers to mobile phones via different
networks.
