Guide Me
Hello dear learner! Welcome to this Self-Instructional
Material (SIM) on science learning. This material will help you
understand the characteristics of materials and classify these
materials based on the ability to absorb water, float, sink, and
undergo decay (S4MT-Ia-1).
After going through this SIM, you will be able to:

1. classify materials based on the ability to undergo decay;

and
2. practice waste segregation.

Materials that undergo decay are decomposed by

microorganisms, bacteria and fungi. These are animal wastes,
green wastes, food wastes, and other wastes that would decompose
for a short period of time.

Decaying materials need to be classified and segregated properly

to prevent flies, cockroaches and rats from living and breeding on
it. Children like you need to learn how to categorize decaying
materials to prevent health problems. It is essential to segregate
waste in order to prevent illness, save the environment, earn
money and avoid penalties.

1
Let Me Do It

Activity 1: Point It Out!

Directions: Name the material in each group that undergoes

decay. Write your answer on your Science activity notebook.

1.
cellophane dried fish marble stone
e

2.
can crayon paper spoon

3. bone hair pins glass nail

4.
mirror okra pail plate

5. dipper fork knife tissue

2

Activity 2. To Decay or Not?

Directions: Choose the name of the material that does not belong
to the group. Write your answer on your science activity notebook.

1.
cellophane leaf marbles stones

2.
can crayons paper spoon

3. glass plastic bottle ring wood

4.
bottle corn husk shirt

5.
ball dead rat flower paper bag

3

Activity 3. Name that Matters!

Directions: Name one (1) material that undergoes decay found in:

1. your bag ___________________

2. a backyard ___________________

3. a bedroom ___________________

4. your classroom ___________________

5. the kitchen ___________________

Remember: Materials that decay

have germs. If you happen to
touch them, wash your hands
immediately!

4
Try Me

Directions: Read the questions carefully. Write the letter of your

answer on your science activity notebook.
1. Which of the following materials undergo decay?
A. can C. rat
B. cellophane D. slippers

2. The following materials undergo decay, EXCEPT:

A. Animal body C. Plastic pail
B. Plant leaf D. Tissue paper

3. Which pupil practices proper segregation of wastes?

A. Pupil A threw coconut husks in the river.
B. Pupil B threw the scrap papers in the ground.
C. Pupil C threw the rotten fruits in the compost pit.
D. Pupil D threw banana peelings and candy wrappers in
the same trash can.

4. What will you do if you see a dead rat on the ground?

A. Burn it.
B. Bury it.
C. Give it to a friend.
D. Throw it in the compost pit.

5. What causes decay of materials?

A. Bacteria
B. Fungi
C. Bacteria only
D. Both bacteria and fungi

5
Let Me Show You

Directions: Prepare two sacks. One for materials that decay and
another sack for materials that do not decay. Record your daily
disposal following the table below. Write them in your science
activity notebook.

Remember this:

Always segregate your

wastes. This is a way to
avoid any form of pollution
and disease!

 Materials that undergo decay are called BIODEGRADABLE

MATERIALS while materials that do not undergo decay are
called NONBIODEGRADABLE MATERIALS. The trash cans
for biodegradable materials are color green while the trash
cans for non-biodegradable materials are color blue.

 Did you know that classifying materials that decay from those
materials that do not decay is one of the best approaches to
avoid illness like dengue? In 2019, the Philippines had
recorded 146,062 cases of Dengue. If Filipinos would practice
proper waste disposal, this deadly illness could be avoided.
