CALCULUS 2 (BT) – FINAL EXAM

June 30, 2021 • Duration: 90 minutes
INSTRUCTIONS:

• Open book exam. Total questions: 6.

• Communication with other (except with the proctor) is strictly forbidden.

• Write out your answers in detail, presenting and explaining each step.

1. Assume the average energy expended for a lizard to walk or run a distance of 1 km can be estimated
by the function
3.5m0.76
E (m, v) = 2.64m0.67 + ,
v
where E (m, v) is the energy used (in kcal per hour), m is the mass (in g), and v is the speed of movement
(in km per hour) of the animal (v > 0).
∂ E ∂ E ∂ 2E ∂ 2E
(a) (10 points) Find , , , .
∂ m ∂ v ∂ m2 ∂ v2
(b) (5 points) Find Ev (200, 5) and interpret your answer.
(c) (5 points) If m = 200, dm = −0.1, v = 5, dv = 5.1, find the total differentials of E(m, v).

2. Let z = f (x, y) = x2 + y4 − 4xy.

(a) (10 points) Find an equation for the tangent plane of z = f (x, y) at (x, y) = (1, 0).
(b) (10 points) Find the local maximum and minimum values and saddle points f (x, y).

3. Data collected by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (USA) suggests
that 69.7% of 18-20 year olds consumed alcoholic beverages in any given year. Suppose a random
sample of ten 18-20 year olds is taken.
(a) (5 points) Find the probability that exactly six out of ten consumed alcoholic beverages?
(b) (10 points) What is the probability that at most five out of ten randomly sampled 18-20 year olds have
consumed alcoholic beverages?

4. (15 points) Lupus is a medical phenomenon where antibodies that are supposed to attack foreign
cells to prevent infections instead see plasma proteins as foreign bodies, leading to a high risk of blood
clotting. Assume 1.9% of the population suffer from this disease. The test is 98.5% accurate if a person
actually has the disease. That is, if a person actually has the disease, this person will get a positive result
after a test with a probability of 0.985. In addition, the test is 78% accurate if a person does not have the
disease. A patient gets a positive result for lupus after a test, find the probability he/she actually has the
disease.

5. (10 points) A team of wildlife scientists is surveying the number and types of small mammals in a
certain region. Let X denote the number of field mice captured in a trap over a 24-hour period. Suppose
that X has a Poisson distribution with λ = 2.5. What is the probability of finding at least two field mice
in a randomly selected trap?

6. Cholesterol levels for women aged 20 to 34 follow an approximately normal distribution with mean
µ = 185 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dl) and a standard deviation of σ = 39 (mg/dl).
(a) (10 points) A random woman aged 20 to 34 is selected. Find the probability that her cholesterol level
is between 160 (mg/dl) and 220 (mg/dl).
(b) (5 points) Women with cholesterol levels above 220 mg/dl are considered to have “high cholesterol”.
What fraction of the women aged 20 to 34 has “high cholesterol” level?
(c) (5 points) A woman aged 20 to 34 is randomly selected. Let X be her cholesterol level. Find
P(|X − µ| < σ ) and P(|X − µ| < 2σ ).
