Impression Techniques for

Dental Implants
Prosthodontic department
Types of impression techniques:
There are three types of impression
Techniques.
1-prepared abutment technique (without trasnfer
coping and implant analogue): similar to the
slandered crown and bridge impression .
-the technique is usually used with single implant
cases .
-the prepared abutment is screwed to the implant
intraorally and an elastomeric impression is taken
and poured in dental stone for fabrication of the
final restoration.
- The impression is removed parallel to the
implant’s long axis.
-The other two techniques utilize transfer copings and
implant analogues.

-These techniques can be used for single or multi-implant

restorations.

Transfer copings are either: -

a- tapered ( looks like the butment) or -

B- parallel side impression coping (pick up coping) used -

for the open tray technique.
2-indirect technique: can be used with the implant abutment or
with a transfer coping.

-in this technique after setting of the impression material the

copings are not removed with the impression . The copings
will be unscrewed and fixed to the suitable size analogue and
reinserted in the impression before pouring.

-Used trays have no opening holes .

3- Direct Pick-up technique (open tray): Special trays are used
with occlussal openings that allow the long transfer copings to
protrude through them.

-after setting of the impression material the screws of the transfer

copings are untightened to allow removal of the impression
with the present transfer copings.

-implant analogues are then screwed to the transfer copings, then

impressions are poured.

- Transfer copings could be splinted (using duralay) or unsplinted

Another classification of the impression techniques :

1- prepared abutment technique : similar to the standard crown

and bridge technique.

2- implant level technique: it records the implant’s location

intraorally. And it’s emergence

3-abutment level technique: it records abutment for screw

location that was screwed to the implant intraorally. It is used
for screw retained prothesis.
1-Prepared Abutment Impression, Closed Tray -
Crown and Bridge Technique
1- remove the healing abutment. Make sure that the implant’s platform is free
from bone or soft tissue.

2-place the prepared abutment and tighten it’s screw . To insure complete

seating of the abutment take a periapical radiograph.

3-torque the implant screw to 30 Ncm using a torque wrench and a hex driver.

4-block the screw access hole on the top of the abutment using pink wax.

5-syringe light or medium body impression material around the abutment .

Then make a full arch impression using medium or heavy body
elastomeric impression material.

For provisional fabrication : lubricate the abutment and use the technique and
material of choice.
2- a- Implant-level Impression, Closed Tray
- Indirect Transfer Technique
1- remove the healing abutment using the hex driver. Make sure
the implant plat form is free from soft tissue or bone.

2-Select suitable impression coping that match the intended final

abutment, and the healing abutment.
2-b- Implant-level Impression, Open Tray
- Direct Pick-up Technique
3-a- Abutment level impression, Closed tray-
Indirect transfer technique
3-b- Abutment –level impression, open tray-Direct pick-
up technique
The lab procedures then starts to fabricate the •
final prothesis on the articulated working cast
prior sending it back to the dental clinic.
