ACID RAIN - ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS & SOLUTIONS

NATURE
Acid rain causes harm to forests as it
seeps into the ground and dissolves
nutrients that trees require to remain
healthy.
Acid rain also allows aluminum to be
released into the soil which makes it
harder for trees to soak up water, this
loss of nutrients and water present
leads to infections and insects
impacting the forests more and leads
to them dying faster.
The aluminum that has been released
into the soil eventually leads to water
and is extremely toxic to the aquatic
wildlife present.
HUMANS
Could lead to stunted growth and even
death vegetation cover and plantations
since they are usually encircled by
acidic fogs and clouds
Structures constructed using stones
and minerals corrode in contact with
minerals from acid rain making
buildings weak and more likely to
decay
Sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide gases
degrade visibility and can cause
accidents and can cause health
problems when inhaled can cause lung
and heart problems such as bronchitis
and asthma.

ANIMALS
Harm/kill individual fish, reduce fish population
numbers
Decrease the number of individuals in a species which
will lead to its extinction after some years
Phytoplankton in lakes may perish it, there is less food
available for insects, which depend on phytoplankton.
SOLUTIONS
Industries can use coal which has less sulphur or can
wash the coal so that some sulphur can be removed
We can use renewable energy resources like solar
energy and geothermal energy
We can encourage the use of electric cars or non-
polluting vehicles
