SUMMARY /TRIVIA
Things that you need to know in 5 pin bowling
• THE BALL
The bowling ball itself is hand-sized, completely without holes and is easy to roll. Technically, five-pin
balls are small enough to fit into the player’s hand.
• THE PINS
In 5 pin bowling, the bowling pins are 25% smaller than in ten pin but is much larger than a Duckpin.
Five pins are arranged in a V-formation at the end of the lane and what makes this variation unique
is that every pin is worth different points depending on their placement in the V-formation which gives
us a total of 15 points.
One of the unique feature of 5 pin bowling is the blue rubber or what we call as Band. A one-inch
piece of rubber attached to the belly of a bowling pin - controlling the action of the pins after being hit
by the ball.
The first thing anyone needs to understand about keeping score is that a game of five pin bowling
involves 10 frames (turns). The bowler will deliver 3 bowling balls in each frame, except where a
strike or spare has been bowled, in which case only 1 or 2 balls, respectively, will be delivered in the
frame.
Simple illustration
➢ STRIKE
We will start with the frame 7. Just for example the running score is 55 in frame 6. In frame 7 she
knocked down all the pins on her first shot, bowling a STRIKE (marked as “X”). When a Strike is bowled

no further deliveries are made in that frame. Although the value of the 5 pins knocked down in the
Strike is 15 points, these points are not added in just yet as the strike entitles the bowler to also add in
the point value of her next 2 deliveries. The total points are therefore left unmarked for now.
With that, the player will start to play in frame 8, Let's say, In frame 8 the bowler’s first delivery earns
her 5 points or hit only the headpin. Still we do not add in a score in the 7th frame as a Strike includes
the next two deliveries. On her second ball in the 8th frame he knocks down all the remaining pins,
bowling a SPARE (marked as “/”).
Now with 2 deliveries completed after the strike in the 7th frame we can go back and record the points
earned in Frame 7. Firstly a strike in frame 7 is worth 15 points (all pins were knocked down). Added
to this is the value of the next two balls (15 points recorded in frame 8… the first ball earned 5 and the
spare ensured another 10). So, the strike in frame 7 earned 30 points, which we add to the 55 points
in frame 6 for a total of 85 points in frame 7.
➢ SPARE
Another condition here, Having bowled a Spare in the next frame, frame 8’s score cannot be tallied
until the next delivery is made. If strike need to have 2 deliveries before it will be recorded, spare also
need to have another 1 delivery to record its score. In our continuing example, the bowler’s first ball in
frame 9 only knocks down a 3 Pin. These 3 points are added to the 15 points earned in frame 8 for a
total earnings of 18 points on the Spare which, added to the 85 points in frame 7 give the bowler a total
of 103 points in frame.

A strike is when all five pins are knocked down with 1 ball. Scoring a strike in a frame allows the bowler
to add points from the next two balls thrown in the following frame. If you get the strike, you need to
have another 2 deliveries before you could be able to mark the score.
A spare is when all five pins are knocked down within 2 balls. And in the 5 pin bowling rules, if you will
be going to have a spare, you need to have another 1 delivery or game to be able to mark and placed
the score.
A perfect score in bowling is 450, which can be obtained by combining more than one strike.
• “Headpin" (denoted H on a score sheet): punching the headpin on the first ball.
• “[number]-pack": Term for a number of consecutive strikes. Ex. 6-pack for 6 consecutive
strikes
• “Strike out": Finishing the game with Three or more strikes (sound effect)
When a player crosses the foul line and touches the lane during the bowling, a foul is awarded to the
player. In case of a foul, even if some pins are knocked down, those are not counted. A foul will be
counted as a ball with zero score.
