Introduction
Today’s adolescents are exposed to a technology
revolution with the prevalence of computer use
and accessibility, the internet, and sophisticated
mobile phones.

The social environment of present-day

adolescents has increasingly become digitally
mediated. The amount of time these adolescents
spend online can have both positive and negative
outcomes (Santrock, 2014).
With this influx of digital technology, a new version
of the self is formed --- the DIGITAL SELF.
Media Users Mobile Social Users
Grew by 12 million or 25% Increased by 13 million 32%
Almost two-thirds of the
world's population now has
a mobile phone.

More than one in five of the

world's population shopped
online in the past 30 days.
SELF AND OTHER IN
CYBERSPACE

Digital literacy – defined as

those capabilities possessed
by individuals who are living,
learning, and working in a
digital society.
In real world, authority and
status may be expressed by
clothing and body language.

In cyberspace, people are

more willing to speak out and
misbehave without fear of
disapproval and punishment
from authority figures.
Online disinhibition is the lack
of restrain one feels when
communicating online in
comparison to
communicating in-person.
Two Categories of Online Disinhibition
1.BENIGN DISINHIBITION - describes behavior in which
people might self-disclose more on the internet than
they would in real life, or go out of their way to help
someone or show kindness

2.TOXIC DISINHIBITION - describes behavior that

includes rude language, threats, and visiting places
of pornography, crime, and violence on the internet–
places the person might not go to in real life
Example:
Cyberbullying – a form of bullying that takes place
using electronic technology

Cyber Harassment – the use of ICT to harass, control,

manipulate or habitually disparage a child, adult,
business, or group without direct or implied physical
harm.
I, ME, AND MY USER ID ONLINE IDENTITY

DIGITAL IDENTITY (DI) – refers to anything that

describes a persona an individual presents across
all the digital spaces that he/she is represented in.
SELF-PRESENTATION
STRATEGIES AND IMPRESSION
MANAGEMENT
How do people present
themselves online?
Self-presentation is a range of strategies that
people adopt to shape what others think of them.

1.Self-promotion – The person who is using self-

promotion is trying to show he/she is competent,
effective or a winner. This person expects respect.
He/she speaks proudly about his/her experiences or
achievement.
2.Ingratiation – The person has a desire to be likeable.
They expect affection. This person takes an interest in
one’s personal lives to show them that they are
friendly.
3. Exemplification – The person has an intention to
achieve worth from others. He/she expects others to feel
guilty by their actions. This person tries to appear like a
hard-working dedicated employee to make others feel
less worthy than they are.
4. Intimidation – The person tries to appear dangerous or
ruthless. He/she expects others to be afraid of them.
5.Supplication – The person would like to appear helpless
(handicapped or unfortunate). He/she aims to achieve
nurturance from others. This person will act as if they
know less than others so people will help them out.
Setting Boundaries To Your Online Self: Smart
Sharing

The following guidelines will help you share

information online in a smart way that will protect
yourself and not harm others. Before posting or
sharing anything online, consider the following:

1.Is this post/story necessary?

2. Is there a real benefit to this post? Is it funny, warm-
hearted, teachable - or am I just making noise online
without purpose?

3. Have we (as a family or parent/child) resolved this

issue? An issue that is sill being worked out at home,
or one that is either vulnerable or high emotional,
should not made public.
4. Is it appropriate? Does it stay within the boundaries
of our family values?

5. Will this seem as funny in 5, 10, or 15 years? Or is this

post better suited for sharing with a small group of
family members? Or maybe not at all?
