SECTION 2: Reading Comprehension

The Top End Fauna
The Northern Territory is relatively different from many other Australian states in several aspects
including climate, geographical diversity, the richness of aboriginal culture, and wildlife. Even
for many Australians, a trip to the Northern Territory may seem like visiting another country.
Although a large number of travellers come to the Northern Territory to see the most famous Uluru,
which is a massive sandstone monolith in the heart of NT’s arid red centre situated near Alice
Springs, the wildlife of the state has now also begun to attract travellers from other Australian
states as well as other parts of the world.

Increasingly popular places in the Northern Territory include Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park which can be
described as a living cultural landscape where earth and the natural history exist as one. Another popular National
Park is the enormous, biodiverse nature reserve called Kakadu National Park. It is a permanent tropical home for
one-third of Australia’s bird species including kingfishers, jacanas, egrets, spoonbills, jabirus, and magpie geese.
The most popular, however, is situated near the township of Batchelor in the south-west of Darwin. It is called
Litchfield National Park. It covers approximately 1500 km2 of land and water.

The climate and availability of nutrition in natural sources enable the Northern Territory to support a wide range of
native animals from mammals and marsupials through to reptiles and insects. Some of the most noteworthy
residents of this region are the carpet python, crocodile, wallaby, bandicoot, dingo, flying fox, possum, scrub fowl,
frilled neck lizard, and cockatoo. Native animals play a significant part in the preservation of the Northern Territory’s
natural environment by serving complex ecosystem functions such as spreading seeds, recycling nutrients, eating
insect pests, and pollinating flowers.

WRITING TASK 1
Explain why and how you decided to study in the Northern Territory?
(100 word minimum)

While many students choose to study at one of the numerous national institutions, I chose to study in the Northern Territory for
a variety of reasons. For starters, it provides me with the opportunity to acquire a high-quality Australian education. Furthermore,
while studying will be the most essential aspect of your stay in the Northern Territory, there are several opportunities to learn
outside of the classroom as well. Furthermore, the Territory boasts a distinct lifestyle as well as a wealth of natural beauty and

my future. Many firms welcome foreign students with job and career development options, including casual work throughout
studies and internships as part of my course that will be relevant for my field of study. Furthermore, the Northern Territory
