Penguins and otters at a Japanese aquarium are feeling the effects of inflation. That's when the
price of things go up. Right now, food costs a lot more than usual in Japan and other places
around the world. So the aquarium is buying a new, cheaper food for its penguins and otters after
a jump in prices made the usual food too costly. But there's a problem. The animals are refusing to
eat the cheaper food!

The Hakone-en Aquarium is in central Japan. It is just west of Tokyo, the capital of Japan. In an
effort to spend less money, the aquarium stopped serving some of its traditional and more
expensive horse mackerel, which is a type of fish. The aquarium is providing a cheaper variety
instead.

But not all the animals approve of their new meal. Some penguins turn up their beaks at the
mackerel.

"They take it into their mouths at first, but then they decide they don't like it and drop it," said
Hiroki Shimamoto. He's the head of the aquarium.

Otters Say "No Way!"

He guesses that the picky penguins may be objecting

to the size of their new meals. They are bigger than
usual.

"They sense something is off," he said.

The problem is even worse among the aquarium's

otters. They have all rejected the cheaper fish,
Shimamoto added.

Fish Prices Have Gone Up

The aquarium said it made the switch after horse mackerel prices went up about 20 percent to 30
percent from last year. Prices rose because fishermen could not catch as much. When there was
not enough to sell, they sold what they had for a higher price.

The aquarium is still purchasing some horse mackerel, but it has no plans to go back entirely.
Prices must fall first, Shimamoto said.

"It all depends on when things get back to normal."
