Solar System

 Sun
- The sun gets hotter and brighter each year.
- The color of the sun appears yellow orange, but it is actually the all the
colors of the rainbow.
- It shines out white light, but that white light is actually all the colors put
together.
 Fun Fact
- It was once believed that objects revolved around the earth because
they would see the sun in the morning, and vanish at night.
- Nicolas Copernicus had the unusual idea that the earth revolved around
the sun. Most people in his time didn’t believe him though.
- Galileo Galilei was an astronomer that believed him. He taught us to use
the telescope and made scientists understand that Copernicus was right
about the sun being the center of the universe.
 Planets
 Mercury
- Reaches up to 750 degrees during sunshine and negative 300
degrees at night
- It has no atmosphere that’s no heat is trapped that’s why it gets
very cold at night
 Venus
- It is burning hot. Stay hot all day and night.
- Its clouds have sulfuric acid which are heat trapping gases
- FUN FACT! It’s backwards day on Venus. It spins from east to
west!
 Earth
- The only planet that can sustain life.
- God put the earth in a perfect distance from the sun. If we were
too close, it would be extremely hot. It we were farther, it would
be too cold. It would be hard for human life to survive if the earth
wasn’t in its perfect position.
 Mars
- It is red because of the rusting of iron on its soil
- Olympus Mons is three times the size of Mt. Everest!
 Jupiter
- The great red spot is a huge storm that has lasted for hundreds of
years.
- Has a secret inner core that scientists believe is about the size of
one little earth
- Has the largest moon on the solar system named Ganymede
 Saturn
- Its rings are made from ice, rocks, and dust that can be grain sized
to the size of a house!
- Least dense of all the planets. If there was a very big body of
water, Saturn can float on it.
- It is the planet with most moons. 82 moons
 Uranus
- It is blue-green in color because of the methane gas in its
atmosphere. Methane is known to absorb red light.
- Like Venus, it also rotates from east to west.
- Spins like a rolling bowling ball because of its tilt.
- Uranus has 2 sets of rings like Saturn, but is not that visible.
 Neptune
- Has more methane that’s why it has a darker blue shade.
- It probably rains diamonds, methane can be turned into diamond
dust.
 Asteroid Belt
- Astronomers have a hypothesis that there could have been a
planet in between Mars and Jupiter that exploded
