Lesson 8:

*Illustrates the center-radius

form of the equation of a
circle
*Determines the center and
radius of a circle given its
equation and vice versa
There are two different forms of the
equation of a circle:

the standard form and the general form.

The standard or center-radius form of the
equation of a circle is in the form 𝒙𝟐 + 𝒚𝟐 = 𝒓𝟐
where the center is at the point (0, 0) or at the origin,
and the radius r.
The other standard form of the equation of a
circle is 𝒙 − 𝒉 2 + 𝒚 − 𝒌 2 = 𝒓2

with the center at the point (h, k) and with the

radius r.
These forms of equations are very helpful to find
the center and the radius of a circle easily.
The general form of the equation of a circle is
the form 𝒙𝟐 + 𝒚𝟐 + 𝑫𝒙 + 𝑬𝒚 + 𝑭 = 𝟎,
𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒 𝐷, 𝐸 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐹 𝑎𝑟𝑒 𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑙 𝑛𝑢𝑚𝑏𝑒𝑟𝑠.
This equation is obtained by expanding the standard
equation of a circle (𝑥 − ℎ)2 +(𝑦 − 𝑘)2 = 𝑟 2 .
However, in this week’s learning activity, we will be
focusing only on the center-radius form of the
equation of a circle.
