(b) A statement must be bioloaicalty/scientifically correct and therefore $e mot simply look for @ key word or mene and mark it correct, (e.g, “waste materials from the i leave the anus as by the process of excretion”, will not be acceptable, even if the Points underlined are on the marking scheme.) (©) Disregard speltin (d) Do not select Correct points from a list, which inc Fruldates give five, mark the first three and ignore the last two. Likewise, If the candidate has made several attempts at the same points without clearly crossing some out, mark the first attempt. The candidate is answering the question, not the examiner. The appropriateness and suitability ofthese points will be discussed. “The Chief Examiner's decision on points for discussion will be final. Examiners are responsible for recording all changes to the marking scheme and for ensuring that all aspects of marking and the marking scheme are understood. Photocopies of elther marked or unmarked scripts wil be availabe to faciltate the interpretation of the marking scheme. ‘Al examiners are expected to stay until the work of the meeting has been completed. ‘Any examiners who are absent from a meeting to which they had been invited «will normally be debarred from marking in that examination. i. xx, mu Page 4 of 9 MECHANICS OF MARKING been derived, but A well-marked script should not only show how the total mavk has should also be capable of being checked easily for interpretation, completeness (no sections overlooked) and accuracy in totalling and transcribing marks. 1 2 10 an 2 13 14 15 All marking must be carried out in red ink (felt tip, biro). i k is awarded. This Place a large tick (/ ) precisely at the point where a marl may be awarded for a word, a phrase or a passage conveying a Ged correct biological/scientific answer. Misplaced ticks cause problems coordination and are indicative of a casual approach to the marking. Half marks are occasionally used and should be indicated by a large tick joined to the superscript 2 (7) Place a large tick and an encircled superscript A ( ~“@)) at the point where you have awarded a mark for a valid point not on the mark scheme but which is equally acceptable as an altemative to a phrase or idea which is on_the marking scheme, Place an encircled superscript R (®) at the point where you have not awarded a mark because the candidate has either made a mistake or failed to provide sufficient information to qualify for a mark, Marking symbols 4 and 5 indicate that the examiner has made a well- reasoned subjective judgement. Indicate marks awarded for diagrams in the right-hand margin as D = 3 etc. Indicate marks awarded for labels on diagrams with a tick alongside the label and, in the right-hand margin, L = 3 etc. When the maximum number of marks for a section have been awarded write max 5. etc. in the right-hand margin and cancel the excess number of ticks (%) Each page of the candidate's ‘script must show evidence that it has been marked, If no marks are awarded for a page, indicate the fact with 0 in the right-hand margin. ‘Add together the number of ticks for each section of a question, (or for a whole age if requested to do so), and record this as a’ sub-total in the right-hand margin at the appropriate position on the page. ‘Add together the sub-totals (or page totals) for each question and record the ‘mark in the right-hand margin at the end of the question. Count up all the ticks and D and L marks etc. for the question in reverse order and if the total agrees with that previously recorded, circle the total to signify that you have double checked. Transfer this mark to the “Questions Answered" box on the front of the script, if appropriate. {The total mark for the question paper should be recorded under the question totals and, in addition, in the top right-hand corner of the front of the script. Again, it should be verified before being circled, ‘The marks recorded in operations 10, 11, 12 must be verified as a ‘separate operation, preferably by another person.
