李主任： 我希望这个项目可以在三个月后完成，这样我们的知名度会更高，
行销通路也会更广。
Lǐ zhǔrèn: Wǒ xīwàng zhège xiàngmù kěyǐ zài sān ge yuè hòu wánchéng, zhèyàng
(Ms. Li, wǒmen de zhīmíngdù huì gèng gāo, xíngxiāo tōnglù yě huì gèng guǎng.

Yóu zhǔrèn: Dànshì wǒmen zhìzuòbù méiyǒu bànfǎ zài sān ge yuè de qīxiàn nèi
(Mr. You, wánchéng zhège xiàngmù. Shíjiān tài jǐnpò le.
department (Unfortunately, our production department won’t be able to do this

李主任： 我认为时间一点也不紧迫。你们不是有足够的人力吗？
Lǐ zhǔrèn: Wǒ rènwéi shíjiān yìdiǎn yě bù jǐnpò. Nǐmen bú shì yǒu zúgòu de rénlì
(Ms. Li:) ma?
(I don’t think the deadline is tight at all. Don’t you have enough
manpower?)
游主任： 我们只有三个人，但是这要五个人的小组才做得完。
Yóu zhǔrèn: Wǒmen zhǐ yǒu sān ge rén, dànshì zhè yào wǔ ge rén de xiǎozǔ cái zuò
(Mr. You:) de wán.
(We have only three members of staff, but this project requires a team of
five.)
李主任： 难道三个人做不完吗？
Lǐ zhǔrèn: Nándào sān ge rén zuò bù wán ma?
(Ms. Li:) (Can’t you manage with a team of three?)
游主任： 也许三个人做得完，但是会做不好。

Yóu zhǔrèn: Yěxǔ sān ge rén zuò de wán, dànshì huì zuò bù hǎo.
(Mr. You:) (Even if we could manage with a team of three, we won’t be able to do a
good job of it.)
李主任： 我希望你们办得到。目前最重要的事，是打开我们的知名度，所以
我们一定得快一点。
Lǐ zhǔrèn: Wǒ xīwàng nǐmen bàn de dào. Mùqián zuì zhòngyào de shì, shì dǎkāi
(Ms. Li:) wǒmen de zhīmíngdù, suǒyǐ wǒmen yídìng děi kuài yìdiǎn.
(I hope that you can do it. Right now, building our brand name is the
most essential task, so we must move quickly.)
游主任： 我们也想快一点，但是我们也必须考虑质量的问题。
Yóu zhǔrèn: Wǒmen yě xiǎng kuài yìdiǎn, dànshì wǒmen yě bìxū kǎolù zhìliàng de
(Mr. You:) wèntí.
(We’d like to work faster, but we must also take into account quality
standards.)
李主任： 你们制作部每次不是说时间不够，就是说人力不够。你们不配合我
们的期限，就是为难我们！
Lǐ zhǔrèn: Nǐmen zhìzuòbù měicì bú shì shuō shíjiān bú gòu , jiù shì shuō rénlì bú
(Ms. Li:) gòu. Nǐmen bú pèihé wǒmen de qīxiàn, jiù shì wéinán wǒmen!
(You guys in production are always saying that you don’t have enough
time, or manpower. You’re making things difficult for us when you don’t
meet our deadlines.)
游主任： 我们只是就事论事，没有为难你们。
Yóu zhǔrèn: Wǒmen zhǐshì jiù shì lùn shì, méiyǒu wéinán nǐmen.
(Mr. You:) (We’re only stating the facts; not trying to make things difficult for you
guys.)
老 板： 好了，你们别再争论了。大家都应该想想怎么做比较可行。我们下
个星期再开一次会。
Lǎobǎn: Hǎo le, nǐmen bié zài zhēnglùn le. Dàjiā dōu yīnggāi xiǎngxiang zěnme
(Boss:) zuò bǐjiào kěxíng. Wǒmen xiàge xīngqī zài kāi yí cì huì.
(Okay you guys, don’t get too worked up. Let’s all think how we can
come up with a solution. We’ll have another meeting next week.)

Listen to the recording and indicate the tones on the pinyin in the book. (You’ll hear
each item read out three times.)

In this recording, you’ll hear a conversation between three speakers. Listen and
choose the best answer to each question in the book. Listen to the recording a second
time if you didn’t catch everything the first time round.

老板: 你们想出可行的办法了没有？来，游主任，你先说。
Lǎobǎn: Nǐmen xiǎngchū kěxíng de bànfǎ le méiyǒu? Lái, Yóu zhǔrèn, nǐ xiān
(Boss:) shuō.
(Have you guys thought of a feasible plan? Ms. You, you go first.)
游主任: 我算过了，如果要在期限内完成专案的话，我需要多两个人。
Yóu zhǔrèn: Wǒ suànguò le, rúguǒ yào zài qīxiàn nèi wánchéng zhuānàn de huà, wǒ
(Ms. You, xūyào duō liǎng ge rén.
department (I’ve done my calculations and in order to complete the project on time,
head:) I need two more staff.)
老板: 多两个人！你的部门已经有六个人了。
Lǎobǎn: Duō liǎng ge rén! Nǐ de bùmen yǐjīng yǒu liù ge rén le.
(Boss:) (Two more people? You already have six people in your department.)
游主任: 对，可是我还有别的专案要做，这个专案得五个人才能做得完。

Yóu zhǔrèn: Duì, kěshì wǒ háiyǒu bié de zhuānàn yào zuò, zhège zhuānàn děi wǔ ge
(Ms. You:) rén cái néng zuò de wán.
(Yes, but I have other ongoing projects, and this project needs to be
handled by a team of five.)
老板: 不行，这样花太多钱了。李主任，你有没有什么好方法？
Lǎobǎn: Bù xíng, zhèyàng huā tài duō qián le. Lǐ zhǔrèn, nǐ yǒu méiyǒu shénme
(Boss:) hǎo fāngfǎ?
(No, that won’t do, it would cost too much. Mr. Li, do you have any
solutions?)
李主任: 我认为游主任应该告诉我们，她要怎么用她的人力，还有，她要怎
么做这个专案。
Lǐ zhǔrèn: Wǒ rènwéi Yóu zhǔrèn yīnggāi gàosù wǒmen, tā yào zěnme yòng tā de
(Mr. Li, rénlì, háiyǒu, tā yào zěnme zuò zhège zhuānàn.
department (I think that Ms. You should explain how she intends to deploy her staff,
head:) and how she plans to complete this project.)
游主任: 这个部分，上次开会的时候我就说过了。
Yóu zhǔrèn: Zhège bùfèn, shàngcì kāihuì de shíhou wǒ jiù shuōguò le.
(Ms. You:) (I have already elaborated this bit during our last meeting.)
老板: 好了，你们不要又争论了。这样吧，李主任，你再去跟客户谈谈，
看看能不能延长期限，晚一点交货。我们后天再开一次会。游主任，
你应该现在就想办法开始进行这个专案的工作。
Lǎobǎn: Hǎo le, nǐmen bú yào yòu zhēnglùn le. Zhèyàng ba, Lǐ zhǔrèn, nǐ zài qù
(Boss:) gēn kèhù tántan, kànkan néng bùnéng yáncháng qīxiàn, wǎn yìdiǎn
jiāohuò. Wǒmen hòutiān zài kāi yí cì huì. Yóu zhǔrèn, nǐ yīnggāi
xiànzài jiù xiǎng bànfǎ kāishǐ jìnxíng zhège zhuānàn de gōngzuò .
(Okay you guys, don’t get too worked up. Let’s try this: Mr. Li, you talk
to the clients again about a possible extension so that we can deliver the
goods later. We’ll have another meeting the day after tomorrow.
Ms. You, you need to start thinking of a way to get this project done right
now.)

Yóu biǎo zhōng kě kàn chū, shàngshì sì ge yuè yǐlái, shíjì xiāoshòuliàng jīhū shì

(We can see from the graph that, four months after the launch, our actual sales are
almost twice the initial estimate.)

(This is due to the success of our marketing efforts. Apart from running online sales
