M777 155mm Lightweight Towed

Howitzer FACT SHEET

What

The M777 155mm Lightweight Towed Howitzer is employed by the Australian Army to provide direct
support to ground forces.

Why

The M777’s digital connectivity allows for rapid, safe and accurate application of effects across the
battlespace. It can also link with Australian and coalition networks providing timely responses as
required to support ground forces in all weather conditions, by day or night. The M777 provides
direct support to combat troops through offensive and defensive fires with conventional and
precision-guided projectiles. It can also employ illuminating and smoke projectiles. It can fire 2 x
rounds per minute (sustained) or 5 x rounds per minute (rapid) and has an effective range of 24km
for conventional rounds or 30km for improved rounds.

The M777 can be towed behind the MAN HX77 truck, lifted in the air by CH-47 Chinook helicopter
and carried in RAAF C-17A Globemaster and C-130J Hercules aircraft.

When

The M777 replaced the L119 105mm light gun and the M198 155mm medium gun in Royal
Australian Artillery units.
